In 1852, Hollister became part of Kern County when it was created from parts of river counties Las Animas and Mono. In 1907, Simeon Fuller built a farmstead here which he named Fullerstown after his father-in-law who had died in that year while fighting in Mexico City for the United States army. One year later, Fuller's son bought the farmstead and added an additional two acres (0.8 hectares). The town got its name from Mr. or Mrs.(?) Haltzman who laid out the town site on credit to prospectors for gold during their drive to the Gold Rush era in 1849-1850. In 1912, Mr./Mrs.(?) Leland Clements donated land north of town along State Route 158 to become Hollister Park which served as a picnic ground and playground until 1941 when it was converted into an open air movie theater called The Allied Playhouse which still operates today! Only one other structure remains from pre-war days: A blacksmith shop on West Main Street which was used by farmers for production smelters before World War II; alloys were produced here until 1961 when they switched to metallurgical production at nearby Molyneux International Corporation’s plant near Bakersfield!
