In 1821, Congress passed an act that established the U.S. Coast Guard as a national service organization with its own budget and officers. In 1927, President Calvin Coolidge offered $5 million to purchase two destroyers and four launches known as "The Ladykillers." Hollister, California is located in the Central Valley of California and it was first settled in 1853. The town was named for Hollister, a rancho that was part of the Rancho San Joaquin. The post office was established at Hollister in 1857, and the first store opened in 1860. The population of Hollister grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its dairy farming and other agricultural activities. In 1887, Hollister became an incorporated town with a population of 1,500 people. It experienced several boom years throughout the early 20th century as cotton production increased and new industries such as shipbuilding were founded in nearby Stockton. However, by 1921, when World War I began, Hollister had shrunk to its original size and stopped growing again until it regained some growth after the war. In 1978, Hollister became an unincorporated community once again with a population of 350 people. During most of its history, HollISTER has been a small hamlet with little economic impact other than being an important stop on Highway 101 for travelers heading east or west from Stockton or Modesto. However, over time many businesses have moved intotown including restaurants and retail stores which have helped to change the fabric of what once was a small-town community. Today there are few reminders that HollISTER ever existed save for two faint signs outside of one of its local businesses: One states "E Chinese Restaurant" while the other reads "No Vacancy."

The city experienced rapid growth during World War II with the influx of soldiers and civilians from surrounding communities for work in munitions plants and other military endeavors. However, following the war Hollister lost its status as a major center of industry and commerce; however, it has regained some prosperity since 2000 through its role as a bedroom community for nearby Fresno County.
