Hollister, CA is a small town located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It is bordered by Pasadena to the east and north, Glendale to the west and south, and Fullerton to the southeast. Hollister's population was estimated at 8,821 as of 2019. The Hollister CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program provides market-based access to fresh produce from local growers in exchange for membership dues and volunteered labor. The community also operates a grocery store and several gift shops. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hollister were Spanish missionaries who founded Mission San Gabriel Arcángel on October 17, 1810. At that time it was part of Mexico City Territory. When Mexican president Porfirio Diaz became president in 1913, he ordered all Missions closed because they were not meeting his new policies favoring landowning elites over adobe housing for lower classes. In 1916 Mexican statehood was granted to LA County; however, most missions continued operating until their closure by order of Governor Jesse Ventura in January 1987 due to lack of funding from then-Governor Jerry Brown himself The current town site was platted in 1909 when developers Charles Finkhoff and friends bought property near present day MacArthur Boulevard and Alameda Street from an agriculturalán named José Avila y Tijeras for $2 per acre (equivalent to $ ). Finkhoff named his development "Hollister" after a hill just outside his home town of Oberlin, Ohio where he had been born two years earlier during America's Centennial year. In 1915 Finkhoff sold the rightsheets (the deed not having yet been delivered) back along with other holdings including part of Hollister today’s Elmhurst Avenue Fenway Park Reservoir formed when Starr Lake filled up due to heavy rains during winter 1939-1940: December 1939 – February 1940: March 16 – April 9: April 10 –May 5: May 6 – June 3 Bunker Hill Road leading south out of town between Bunker Hill Road bridge over creek & reservoir opened on July 1st 1940 On November 14th 1951 voters elected Harry Reid as Mayor pro tempore being Vincent Hickey’s running mate; Harry Reid would later become Senator from Nevada On January 7th 1952 Mayor Reid announced plans for a “Great American Drive-in Cinema” which would seat 2200 people inside an enlarged lot across Elmhurst Avenue from downtown Hollister on Main Street; this drive-in cinema went up in flames on Saturday night August 15th 1953 killing 25 people On September 19th 1954 newly appointed Planning Director Giannini proposed that annexation be made available for information purposes only “to provide some understanding about how adjacent communities feel about possible annexation or incorporation into the Townspeople Management Areas pursuant thereto” After much discussion it was decided unanimously that no action would be taken regarding annexation pending further study However residents did begin circulating petitions requesting annexation which led eventually to Measure R becoming an official part of Hollister Town Planner Dick Leyendecker's agenda on November 3rd 1957 following approval by Planning Commission vote On January 11th 1958 following passage by both houses of the State Legislature providing funds necessary for annexed areas including much needed street cleaning money annexation became effective
