In 1859, John Hollister and his wife, Jane, founded the small town of Hollister on the San Joaquin River in what is now Fresno County. The couple's farmstead was only a few hundred acres but they quickly realized that they had to find a way to bring in more income to keep their home and business afloat. In 1861, Hollister became the first town in California to prohibit slavery. This decision not only helped keep Hollister alive but also made it an early symbol of abolitionism in the state. By 1865, however, Hollister's growth had stalled and Jane started losing money exporting goods from her store. She decided to sell her land and move back east with her two children. However, by this time John had already died and his widow continued running the house until it burned down in 1872. The town of Hollister disappeared after its original population dwindled away; however, some traces of it can still be found today thanks to various historical documents such as brochures from John Hollister's era which have been digitized and shared online. Today, Hollister is known for its annual Farmers' Market which takes place on Saturday mornings at City Park across from the old post office building (now a museum).
