Hollister, California is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,331 at the 2010 census. It is home to Hollister College and the HollisterGhosts Museum. Hollister started as a small post office called Hollis on May 1, 1881. It became a village on December 15, 1909 when it amalgamated with neighboring towns of Penacola and Lompoc. On January 1, 1912, it became an incorporated town under the name of Hollister. The name “Hollister” originated from Huckleberry Finn's phrase "hollow holler" which means "the place where all the Indians used to go to hunt." The first school in Hollister was built in 1907 by Mrs. Rebecca Price and Dr. Amos Wistar. A new school was built in 1911 by J.C Rouse and Addie Price for $8,500 (now part of the University of Californias Hastings Campus). A high school opened in 1922 by Mrs. Gertrude Kappenbach with classes beginning September 22nd that year after being built for $5,000 (now part of Diablo Valley College). In 1951 Hollis had its first professional theater company when Playbill Productions began producing plays here through their regional off-Broadway affiliate Playbill Theatre Incorporated together with nearby communities such as Carlsbad Springs and San Marcos to attract more people to town during summer months while there were no theatres open seasonally outside Los Angeles County other than downtown LOS ANGELES!
