Hollister, California is a small city located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 5,461 at the 2010 census and it is the county seat of Kern County. Hollister is one of the most drought-prone counties in California and has experienced three consecutive years of below-average precipitation. Because of its arid climate, Hollister also experiences high levels of air pollution from vehicles, factories, and power plants. The region that now includes Hollister was first settled by people who crossed into what is now Mexico on horseback in 1846. By 1862, when the U.S. acquired California, much of this area had been taken by violence or annexation by other states including Nevada and Arizona. In 1874, John Cranch became governor of Kern County and ordered surveyors to explore for a new county seat. A group led by ranchman George Atherton selected an site on what is now McCullough Road west of downtown Hollister for their new town. The name "Hollister" was chosen because it was recommended to them by Atherton's friend David Silliman (later organizer for the American Federation of Labor). Construction began on what would become Hollister in October 1875; within six months only 30 buildings had been erected due to lack of funds from local citizens and officials alike. In 1886, as part as part of efforts to promote agriculture in central valley communities such as Hemet and Claremont (both located adjacent to Hollister), local resident James Wickersham organized a botanical garden near present day Interstate 10 eastbound exit #2 off I-15 southbound lanes between milepost 9½and 10½ (the "Wickersham Garden"). The garden enjoyed critical acclaim both locally and nationally before succumbing financially to competition from other similar gardens throughout America during the early 20th century; however, remnants can still be found today along McCullough Road outside Ofira Park Elementary School northwest corner intersection with I-10/I-5 just past milepost 12½

Hollister is part of the Fresno-Madera-Kings Canyon, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Hollister has been inhabited by Native Americans for over two thousand years and began to be developed as a farming community in the 1850s. A post office was established in 1858, and by 1860, Hollister had a population of twenty-one people. In 1864, a grant from the federal government to ranchers George Prentice and John Sutter allowed for development of what would become Hollister Township. By 1870, there were ninety-eight people living in Hollister Township. The first store in Hollister opened on December 3rd, 1874. At that time, it was the only business within one mile (1 km) of all of Hollister township. The first storeOwner was J D McNaught who operated it until his death on October 4th 1898. By 1899, businesses had increased to five with Post Office remaining open seven days per week during this time frame In 1916 an Act providing for public education within certain townships became effective; therefore: On November 17th 1916; William Fenton (Class I Deputy Sheriff) laid out section 10A which included sections 010 & 100 block north side of Old Ute Road thence eastward just south of San Bernardino River thence eastward into section 100 block northeast side of same road thence southwest corner onto Union Pacific Railroad track following line thereof until location grid reference given as “Hollisters”; James C McCormack laid out sections 101 & 102 Block North Side Of Hwy 190 East From US 90 To Center OfTownship then easterly Just South Of Depot Line thence West Corner onto railroad track following line thereto until location given as “Hollisters” . . . . . . This act provided for "Public Education" In All Townships Where No Taxation Was Paid Until 1915;; Thereafter Every Person Who Wants To learn How To Read And Do Business Must Go To School After obtaining A License From Superintendent
Hollister was founded in 1868 by a group of local farmers. The town was named for John Hollister, the first postmaster in the area. The town grew quickly and became an important center for agricultural trade. In 1916, Hollister became an incorporated city.
