Hollister, California is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of Southern California. The population was 5,893 at the 2010 census. Hollister is located about an hour northwest of Sacramento and east of Reno. It is bordered by Modesto on the north, Dixon on the east, Salinas on the south, and Stockton on the west. The first Europeans to explore this area were traders who traversed this area in search of trade goods with inland tribes. In 1824 Mexican explorers discovered oil shale deposits near what is now Hollister while exploring for a route to Santa Clara County. They named their discovery "Hollister" after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's aide-de-camp at that time, Hollis Wigglesworth. A man named John Sutter started production at nearby Sutter's Mill in 1848 and soon made it one of the leading winegrowers in Northern California. In 1851 he donated land to establish Yosemite National Park; part of today's Yosemite Valley was included within his gift. In 1865 Hollister became one of ten towns incorporated as part of Modoc County when its population topped 1,000 people. The county lost its status as a separate political entity when it merged into Kern County in 1932. Today Hollister continues to maintain its own government with a sheriff and two representatives from the local school board

Hollister is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. At the 2010 census, Hollister had a population of 753.[1] The Hollister post office was established in 1887 and closed in 1961. The first settlers in what is now Hollister were French Creoles who arrived on a trading packet from Louisiana around 1842. They named the area "Hollis" which means "humble" or "poorly provided for". In 1848, Hugh Nourse and his brother-in-law Thomas Bowen founded the Holmby firm of merchants and built a sawmill on the banks of the river Arroyo Grande. The company prospered until 1865 when it went bankrupt due to overweaning on lumber exports to California. In 1868, John Swayne bought out Hugh Nourse's share of the Holmby mill and continued operations as JSW Holmby & Son until 1889. In 1888, Swayne married Emma Ladd who gave him two children: Willard Jr., born 1890, and Florence May Swayne (born 1893). From 1889 to 1903, Drury Wickersham & Company operated an opera house located one mile west of town along HWY 191A. Although no longer being used as an opera house after 1903 it still remains listed on historical registers as property owned by Mrs. DFW Wickersham (daughter of Drury Wickersham) until her death in 1978. After Mrs DFW Wickersham's death her son sold it to Patrick Sweeney who then donated it to Hollister Historical Society which operates it today as a museum with exhibits about early Hollister history including furniture making at JSW Holmby & Son.]
Hollister is a city in and the county seat of San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 26,822 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Central Coast of California. Hollister has been a small farming town since its founding in 1868. It was first named after local rancher George Hollister and then renamed Hollisterville after J.P. Morgan's donation to the town in 1892. In 1915, it changed its name again to Hollister because of concerns about potential discrimination against Japanese Americans living in the area during World War II. The community was founded by pioneers who arrived from Japan on April 14, 1868, as part of an effort to build a rancho near what is now Bakersfield. The town began as a small farming settlement known only for haymaking and other production activities until early 1870s when lumbering became an important factor in the economy due to new discoveries in nearby Kern County and elsewhere along the Central Coast line. In 1892, entrepreneur John Pemberton donated land to establish what would become Hollister Valley Airport which later became home to Southern Pacific Railroad's Altamont Freight Terminal (now Alameda International Airport). The airport served as a transportation hub for much of central California until it closed following deregulation of air travel in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1975, voters passed Measure M which raised property values within Hollister limits while also providing funds for infrastructure improvements such as streetscape renewal and expanded public education opportunities within the city limits despite objections from some residents over disparities they saw between high-income areas outside of town while residents continued to experience lower levels of economic opportunity inside their own neighborhood . Hollister has seen rapid growth over recent decades with both population increases (+11% per year) and job postings (+100%). This increase has come at a cost however with increased traffic congestion on major arterial roads that have created challenges for businesses seeking access to downtown or larger parts of town . Despite these challenges, overall crime rates have decreased over time although there remain pockets where crime occurs particularly around nightlife areas such as North Park or South Park
