Hollister, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 581 at the 2010 census. Hollister has been inhabited by Native Americans for over five hundred years and first known as "Holla-a-rea" meaning "place of the oaks." In 1859, settlers renamed the community after John Hollis, an American Fur trader who had settled in what is now Kern County. The name stuck and today Hollister is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Kern County. The town's roots go back to 1859 when settlers named it after American Fur trader John Hollis. At that time, Hollister was located in present day Kern County on San Joaquin River east of Bakersfield. The area now including Hollister was part of Tulare County when it was founded on November 7, 1848. Today, many of Tulare's historical courthouse buildings still stand and are used as local government offices. As early as 1849, there were reports of Indians living near the present site of Holmanville and other parts of this small community on eastern San Joaquin River opposite Bakersfield; but no definite evidence exists to support these reports until1860 when Humboldt resident George Atherton wrote: "It would seem that some more or less friendly disposition towards our people prevailed among them up to a certain period previous to this." In 1860 Captain Fenton built his ferry across the river at what is now called Queen's Ferry Landing (now called Pahrump) which facilitated trade between Stockton and Sacramento during thegold Rush era. This crossing became important because it allowed travelers easy access between two major cultural centres - Stockton and Sacramento - without having to travel downriver throughbitter water areas where gold seekers risked their lives trying to find payable nuggets floating downriver below rapids infested with jellyfish! A large cabin was erected by Captain Fenton at Queen’s Ferry Landing for use by passengers from both Stockton and Sacramento who traveled overland from those cities during periods Of high traffic on both rivers due to discoveries along the route for mines and prospectors seeking rich deposits of gold! At about this same time Solano Co., Northern California began issuing paper currency which functioned as money throughout much of Californian history before becoming legal tender status within each county in 1865 under Act No 827 authorized by US Congress!. Gold rush days brought heavy traffic onto Captains Fenton’s ferry landing every day so extensive repairs/maintenance were necessary all year round even though boats could only take limited entries & exits! By 1863 land had been acquired northeast & northwest of current location making future development very difficult…. It may be significant that Captain Fenton never built any further ferries….. he died suddenly while responsible for running his ferry….. electrical gratuities collected by Captains predecessor remained unpaid until 1912!!!
