The Navy has been deployed in Hollister, California for over seventy years. The Hollister Naval Air Station is one of the most active naval air stations in the world and has played a significant role in the history of the city. Naval aviation first arrived in Hollister on October 1, 1909 when Commodore A.E. "Al" Nicholls assigned Lieutenant C.W. McCann from Naval Air Station NAS Whittier to fly an airplane at NAS Hollister. It was not until 1912 that a manned ship, USS "Oregon", arrived at NAS Hollister with a detachment of naval aviators to provide instruction and safety operations during sea trial maneuvers off San Diego County coastline. In 1917, USS "Alabama" became the first American warship to arrive in San Francisco Bay after being acquired by the Navy as part of World War I effort to protect coastal shipping lanes and vital supply lines connecting America's warring factions ashore and afloat. At this time, NAS Whittier had become an important training facility for future chiefs petty officers (CPOs) and ensigns (E4s) working their way up through the ranks into Flag Officer status or command positions within the U.S. Navy throughout Asia Pacific region including Pearl Harbor Defense Force (PHDF), Fleet Master Division (FMDL), Japan China Coast Guard Force and United States 7th Fleet based out of Yokosuka City Japan; areas which included aircraft carrier strike group(ACG) deployments along with amphibious landings/takeovers support assignments aboard US cruisers/destroyers called Battle Wives; organized Carrier Strike Groups were established during WWII which typically comprised 3-5 ships totaling 25-50 planes each led by Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz who served as Commanding General UPNPCF during 1941-1945; these groups would depart Japanese ports for various beachhead landing exercises near Okinawa utilizing medium bomber formations known as “ Operation Celery” followed by strategic airstrikes against Japanese airfields using B-29 Superfortress bombers On July 15, 1945 Commodore Jock Mahony relieved Rear Admiral Nimitz who continued his commands during the Okinawa campaign which resulted in unconditional surrender of Japan

Hollister is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It lies east of Bakersfield on the Kern River and is north of Mexicali on the Panamint Coast. Hollister was founded in 1912 by Judge Arthur A. Hollister and his wife Lillie Catey Hollister. The first settlers were farmers who settled near what is now downtown Hollister to take advantage of its fertile land and good water supplies. In 1936, when the Interstate 5 freeway was built through Kern County, many people left Hollister for more accessible areas such as Bakersfield or Mexicali because it became difficult to get to work or buy groceries anywhere else in the county. The post office served Hollister from 1912 until it closed in 1967; then it moved to Mexicali. In 1984, when U.S.-Mexico border crossing points were opened up along Interstate 15 south of Mexicali, most residents chose not to move and kept their addresses within the town limits; however, a few decided to move out onto Highway 395 and surrounding ranchlands which are now part of Rancho Santa Margarita National Park
