The airbase served as a training ground for fighter pilots and bombers before becoming an operational airbase in 1957. In 1969, the base became inactive and was deactivated. However, it reopened in 1990 as an active duty USAF base. From its original location at 5th Street and Euclid Avenue, the AFB relocated to its current location on Newhall Avenue in Huntington Beach in 1998.
