Huntington Beach is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 59,839 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city within Orange County and the second most populous city in California after Los Angeles. The City of Huntington Beach was officially incorporated on July 21, 1959. The first permanent settler in what is now Huntington Beach was Manuel Nieto, who arrived on horseback from San Francisco on November 9, 1847. He named his new land Rancho Niguel de las Palmas de Santa Ana because he thought it would be a cooler place to live than Mission Viejo with its hot summer sun and humid atmosphere. In 1851, John Sutter discovered gold at Sutter's Gold Rush site and soon began to drill for oil near present-day Huntington Beach. However, no one realized until 1897 when an American exploration team led by George Condon found oil reserves off the coast of Huntington Beach that could potentially be developed into a major refining center for petroleum products. That same year saw the founding of the University of California at Berkeley as part of public pressure to become more competitive in an era where other universities were becoming national powers such as Stanford and Yale. In 1909, Jerome Hirschhorn built his famous “Hirschhorn girl” showgirl houseboat on Harbor Blvd., which became popular with wealthy Sylmar residents for their lavish social events—such as dances and fetes aboard her followed by dinner under stately white tents erected on nearby beacheside lawns before thousands of spectators watching from shoreline walks or balconies across town (see photo). On October 15, 1929 – less than one year after incorporation – Mayor Harry Wohl signed an ordinance creating parks including Harbor Boulevard between Newport Coast Boulevard and Highland Avenue; making access open to all citizens regardless race or sex (see photo). On January 6th 1930 – three weeks after Japanese Americans were interned during World War II – Mayor Wohl authorized construction of Camp Sherman which served as temporary relocation camp for Japanese Americans living east of Redondo Blvd., west of I-5 and north east of Christmas Island (See below). On December 12th 1940 during WWII Japanese American Coast Guard personnel Lt.(jg) Nobuo Kato made an unauthorized landing at Point Joe beach while en route from Ensenada to Nassau following several days without orders from higher command approved sightings over water southwest towards Catalina island; leading eventual arrest including Kato himself Naval Intelligence Officer USN #2c1 James Cook’s affidavit dated December 25th 1941 sworn before United States District Court Windom Dorman stating that Commander Imperial Japanese Navy Patrol Squadron 5 located USS Lexington about 350 miles southeast steering northwestward along Texas coast paralleling shoreline approximately latitude 42°28′20″ N longitude 117°00′W thence southwesterly about 120 degrees upwind (See Below Caption) . This event helped set off America's largest naval engagement in history known as "the hunt for Pearl Harbor" resulting in almost 400 killed & missingplus hundreds more wounded & homeless ..... despite intense efforts by UPI (& later Hearst Newspapers) & local police (& later military) ..... throughout 1945 various UPN investigations resulted only in private individuals being arrested not government officials primarily Rear Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto responsible ultimately Hotspur Incident commanding officer First Fleet Battle Group commander 2nd Fleet Scouting Force based at Long Beach who had ordered this unapproved Landing giving rise to Far East Asia Crisis ... During this period many businesses closed due to lack of customers or employees displaced by war effort ... finally ended when Japan capitulated Little Caesars Pizza opened prior to surrendering .
