It is the fifth most populous city in Orange County and it is also the fastest-growing city in southern California. The coffee industry began in Huntington Beach in 1912 when John D. Rockefeller invested $2,500 into a new coffee roasting business called The Coffee House on Siesta Boulevard. Since then, many of the largest and most famous coffee brands have been located here: Peet's Coffee & Tea, Starbucks, Dunkin' Donuts (since 1990), and Caribou Coffee (since 2002). Today the coffee industry employs over 60% of the city's jobs and continues to grow rapidly - with plans to open over 120 new businesses by 2020. In the early 1800s, Huntington Beach was a small farming community. The first coffee bean was ground in 1852 by one of the town's farmers. A blacksmith named John Meeks started manufacturing cannons in 1867 and soon began selling cannon parts and supplies to businesses throughout Southern California. In 1870, Meeks founded what is now known as Meeks & Sons Furniture Store. The store continued to grow until it closed in 1929. In 1901, Jerald Culp founded the Culp Coffee Company which grew into one of the largest coffee companies in California. In 1928, Culp died and his son Harry took over control of the company. Harry ran the business until he sold it to Joseph Heller in 1984. The city of Huntington Beach became part of Orange County in 1912 and coffee started flowing into the county from various areas including Huntington Beach. In 1924, Don Sheppard opened the first grocery store in Orange County with a cafe inside on North High Street called Don Sheppard's Coffee Shop In 1951, Eugene "Eugene" Richards purchased Don Sheppard's Coffee Shop and reopened it as its own business called The Daily Grind In 1978, Don Sheppard's Cafe closed down after more than 50 years in business In 1984, Joseph Heller bought Don Sheppard's Coffee Shop and reopened it as his own business called The Weekly Grind

The French also started importing large quantities of Brazilian coffee from Brazil – becoming one of the largest buyers of coffee around! During World War II (1939-1945), coffees were important supplies for many Allied troops fighting in Europe and North Africa.
