The first ship to dock in town was the brigantine USS Constitution, which arrived on April 14, 1860. At that time, Huntington Beach was considered a bedroom community for Newport Harbor. The Masons who founded Huntington Beach were instrumental in its growth and development as a harbor town. Over time, the city's maritime heritage has been commemorated with both physical objects and monuments. One of the most significant milestones in this city's maritime history occurred on December 7, 1957 when the USCG launched Operation Crossroads into what was then known as Pascua Maru (now called Timor Leste). This event marked the first time America had contributed troops to an international conflict since World War II. The operation resulted in more than 1,500 American sailors being deployed to help anti-Communist forces overthrow Indonesian dictator Sukarno. The USS Constitution Museum is located inside City Hall on First Street between Second and Third Streets in downtown Huntington Beach. This museum is dedicated tothe 100th anniversary ofthe USS Constitution’s maiden voyage from New York City to San Francisco Bay on November 17, 1906. In 1946, the Huntington Beach Pier Company was incorporated to manage and operate the pier. The company changed its name to Huntington Beach Pier & Marina Corporation in 1951. In 1979, the Corporation merged with the Newport Harbor Waterfront Corporation to form Newport Harbor Waterfront Development Corporation. The corporation developed the beach into one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations. In 1992, it merged with AEGon Entertainment Group to become AEGon Entertainment Incorporated. Today, AEGon Entertainment Incorporated owns and operates more than 20 theme parks across North America including Disneyland Resort Anaheim, Universal Studios Hollywood Orlando and SeaWorld San Diego Zoo & Aquarium).
Huntington Beach is a city located in Orange County, California. The population was 153,711 as of the 2010 census. It is the fourth most populous city in Orange County and the second most populous city on the Central Coast of California. The new Huntington Beach Convention Center opened in 2009 and anchors one side of Harbor Boulevard. According to Forbes magazine, Huntington Beach "is the perfect place to raise a family." With an average household income of $73,898, it is also one of the wealthiest cities in Southern California. The history of Huntington Beach goes back to 1892 when William Fenton purchased land east of what is now downtown for $2 per acre. In 1923, developer Harry Weems bought 1/3 interest in Fenton's company for $10 million and began developing what would become known as "the Newport News District". In 1951, North Coast Air Lines moved its headquarters from San Francisco to Huntington Beach after acquiring nearby San Pedro Airport. The airport served as North Coast's primary hub until 1976 when LAX was built next door and then Ortega Valley Regional Airport became their primary hub. North Coast merged with American Airlines in 1990 and dropped US Airways from their network; this led to much development at US Airways-owned LAX which houses both American Airlines' main Terminal 2 (Hollywood) - which remains open today - and American Eagle Station (Lancaster). On July 15th 1960, voters passed Measure M-1 giving city fathers power over zoning decisions within their borders without state government involvement; this gave rise to what is now known as "city hall rule". On October 24th 1962 Mayor Don Armstrong announced that he would run for a full term but decided not to seek re-election due to health concerns; Armstrong had been diagnosed with leukemia two years earlier while serving on the Board of Supervisors. Incumbent John Kapp announced his candidacy for mayor but lost by a wide margin against challenger James Ahern Jr.. Ahern left office after 3 terms as mayor due mainly because he could not get enough financial backing from developers or businesses interested in building near Interstate 5 or Highway 101 south of town (the only access points into town). After leaving office Ahern founded Kapp & Partners LLP which continues today as one of Huntington Beach's longest running legal firms with more than 100 attorneys representing clients throughout southwestern Orange County. In 2002 Mayor Don Armstrong was inducted into the Orange County Business Hall Of Fame . The first post-World War II settlement in Huntington Beach came about when George Pritchard leased land east of downtown from William Fenton for five years beginning on September 12th 1945. Pritchard later sold his property along Harbor Boulevard for $6 per acre ($100 per lot). With access to inland waterways including Newport News River and Laguna Niguel Lake they quickly developed into a modest fishing village with primarily agricultural usage until well after World War II ended when commercial fishing ventures dried up due technological advances such as refrigeration technology brought about by refrigerated shipping containers arrive
