The city council decided to establish their own national guard unit on December 3, 1942. This unit would be known as Company C, 1st Battalion/5th Marines (1943-1945). After World War II ended, both units were disbanded and their members returned home; however, they continued to exist as separate organizations until 1949 when they merged into one entity called the Huntington Beach National Guardsmen Regiment Incorporated (HHNGR). HHNGR remained inactive until 1990 when it reactivated under new command with Major General Arturo Ramos as its first Commander-in-Chief
