The Huntington Beach Naval base has been a vital part of the California military for over sixty years. The 1st Fleet Air Arm and now the Marine Corps provide support to the city of Huntington Beach through Operation Neptune’s Spear which is responsible for guarding the coastlines of Southern California. This allows us to enjoy all that Huntington Beach has to offer without having our military presence in the city. When I was elected Mayor of Huntington Beach, it was my hope that I would be able to keep our navy here in town as well. In fact, they have even started training local Marines on how to deal with sailors from other countries who might come visit us while we are deployed. It is wonderful that they are doing this because it means that if something happens during our deployment and one of our marines needs help, we can call on them right here in town. This history goes back even further than when these Marines were first sent here from overseas. The Navy actually donated land on which the Naval Training Facility (NTF) stands today. When General MacArthur came into power after World War II, he decided that Angel Island should serve as a naval air station instead of Seal Bay because there was no room for an air force at Angel Island and Seal Bay was too close to downtown Los Angeles. So he ordered President Franklin D Roosevelt to build NTF on this donated land – and so it began! Nowadays, NTF houses both Marine Barracks and Headquarters Battalion which provides housing for both enlisted Marines and their families as well as office space for members of Congress who come by during hearings or visits from abroad. It also houses a range ofUSS Landing Craft dock landing vessels used by amphibious assaults such as those undertaken during Operation Neptune’s Spear or exercises like Rimington III where Sailors from various countries gather together in order learn about each other’s navies. It is amazing how much has changed since then! For example, there once wasn’t a single Starbucks near NTF – now there are several dozen coffee shops across central coastal Orange County! And just down the street from there is 4-year old Toys “R Us which closed its doors last year but still offers visitors unique experiences inside its stores reminiscent of what existed before…. toy shopping at Macy's!" At that time, only an area around Mission Bay had been developed and it was difficult for people to find affordable housing or access healthcare because it was located in far-northcentral Orange County. In order to make sure that all residents could have access to good education and healthcare options as well as enjoy quality amenities such as beaches and restaurants, the brothers turned their idea into reality by forming a company called Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) Incorporated with the goal of building roads connecting San Clemente beach with other parts of southern Orange County. As PCH began construction on its first road from San Clemente beach through Anaheim Hills directly to Anaheim Airport - now known as I-5 - business boomed within just a few years due to increased traffic congestion along coastal Boulevard which then became known simply as "PCH". Since PCH's creation, many new neighborhoods have arisen around PCH including North Parkhurst Heights which contains some of Disneyland's most popular attractions; Poway annexation which added much-needed land adjacent to Qualcomm Stadium; Garden Grove annexation which added much-needed . . .
