The Huntington Beach Naval Shipyard was once the home of America's largest and most powerful naval vessels. The shipyards were active from the 1920s until World War II, when they were closed due to wartime restrictions on navy development. In 1955, the Navy transferred ownership of the shipyards to the City of Huntington Beach. They remain in operation today as a municipal government-owned and operated marine facility.
The first large warship built at the shipyards was USS Constitution (1797). The Constitution served in both American and Mexican Wars before being decommissioned in 1847 and sold to Spain.
In 1854, USS Hatteras (1801) was launched at Huntington Beach. She served as flagship of Commodore James Kensey during his Expedition against Juan José López de Santa Anna y Navarro in 1857-58.
USS Monitor (1861) was also launched at Huntington Beach; she participated in the American Civil War and played a significant role in protecting Southern California from Confederate forces. After her combat service, she became a training vessel for torpedo boats before being placed into storage at Pasadena Bayou Depot until she was requisitioned by Japan for military use during World War II.After her release from Japanese service, she served as a floating barracks for U.S troops stationed overseas before returning to fishing grounds near Laguna Niguel until scrapped in 1957.
During World War II, it is said that over 100 warships were constructed or repaired at Huntington Beach Naval Shipyards; these vessels included destroyers (Halsey), submarines (Washington), Landing Craft Infantry Ships (LCTs), destroyer escorts (John F Kennedy), carriers(Liggett/Baker/Crippen) and aircraft carrier landing ships (Frigate Enterprise/Yorktown).

The history of Huntington Beach begins with three families who started farming in 1887. They named their community after General John C. Huntington, an American general who had fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of California. The original town site was on what is now Donner Avenue between Manzanita Street and Pacific Coast Highway. In 1915, the City of Huntington Beach was incorporated and it became one of the first cities in Orange County to have a water system! The city's first rich man was Arthur Ashe, who bought 90% of the stock in Katella Raceway (later to become part of Auto Club Speedway). In 1933, Raymond Hahn donated land that would become Home Park beach which still contains Harold's Playground today; home to both boys' and girls' soccer teams since 1978 and now also a full-time park for children aged 6–12 years old! In 1957, Disneyland opened its gates within walking distance of Huntington Beach through an agreement between Anaheim Mayor Chuck Yeager and then-City Manager Roy Masterson – breaking ground for what would eventually become one of Southern California's most popular tourist destinations. Since then, tourism has been key to the city's economy with regular events like Arts & Crafts shows taking place at Donner Park during summer months. Additionally,. many world famous athletes have visited or resided here including Steve McQueen (for his racing car races), Tiger Woods (for his golf tournaments), Arnold Schwarzenegger (during his time asGovernor) – just to name a few! Huntington Beach, California is a city in Orange County, California. The population was 44,253 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Pacific Coast of Southern California and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the state. The city's namesake comes from two people--Augustus Hartridge Huntington and his wife Jennie Gertrude Huntington--who bought land here in 1892. The city was founded as an agricultural town with small businesses and homes. However, over time it has become a popular tourist destination for both students and visitors because of its wide variety of attractions including beaches, golf courses, museums, theaters, shopping malls, and restaurants. The first known inhabitants of what is now Huntington Beach were Native American tribe members who lived along the coast before coming ashore to trade with sailors passing through their territory. In 1821 Captain John Culp claimed part of present-day Orange County for Great Britain when he sailed into port at San Pedro Harbor. On July 26th 1835 Spanish Mission Control established by Mexican governor José Joaquín de la Peña granted Rancho Santa Margarita (now part of Irvine) to Ignacio Marqués de las Casas y Padilla which included present-day Huntington Beach area. Las Casas probably named it after his personal friend Augustus Hartridge Huntington who had come down from England to visit him during that year’s Gold Rush era in Southern California (see also: Englishman Descends upon Californian Coast). In 1848 President James K Polk signed Executive Order 9265 creating the US military district comprising allof southern California under Lieutenant General Andrew Swayne Including Pasadena & North Hollywood areas then unincorporated parts of Los Angeles County as well as much of Orange County including Newport Beach which became part of Anaheim 2 years later on January 1st 1850 pursuant to act entitled “An Act for Regulating Commerce with Foreign Countries”; this order formed what is today called Military District No 4 (US CA). At that time there were about 50 civilian residents living within these boundaries plus 10 soldiers garrisoned at Point Mugu Naval Air Station outside Seal beach on Long Island City Limits until 1865 when Point Mugu was transferred to Navy jurisdiction following completion of Pacific action against Japan in World War II During much of the 19th century many industries such as lumbering, mining and shipbuilding dominated economic life here but by 1910 almost all manufacturing had left or been converted to new uses due primarily to technological advances brought about by Standard Oil Company founder John D Rockefeller's investment in oil production throughout Mexico and abroad including investments in railways etc., making northern coastal cities like LA etc., world leaders in industrial development while most eastern coastal cities stagnated or declined somewhat behind those inland counterparts during this period defined by mass production rather than artisanal production characterized by slower technology diffusion leading eventually to newly created global monopolies
Huntington Beach was founded on July 29, 1885 by David B. Huntington and his wife, Emma. The first post office in the town was established in 1888. The first real estate sales were made in 1889. In 1902, the city of Huntington Beach was created from parts of Maxxson and West Covina. The population of Huntington Beach increased rapidly during the early years, reaching a peak of over 105,000 in 1923. However, this growth stopped abruptly after World War II due to a lack of jobs and an increase in housing prices.
