Huntington Park is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 34,813 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in San Bernardino County and one of its three cities (the other two are Riverside and Southern Ontario). The first inhabitants of what is now Huntington Park were Mexican citizens who lived on a rancho there between 1847 and 1851. In 1868, Waddell & Price bought Rancho Niguel from José Vasquez de Cordova, who had been expelled from Mexico. They laid out a town around their rancho and named it after George Washington Irving's estate in New York City – "Irvington". The town never caught on as a settlement and failed to make much money from tolls or trade with the surrounding rural areas. In 1902, Irvings' son-in-law John Dillingham donated 160 acres (66 ha) of land east of downtown to the city for use as an open space park that would eventually be known as Huntington Park. In 1906, Robert Hines developed what is nowowntown Huntington Park into a large new industrial area with processing plants for oil shale, rabbit furriers, leather tanning operations, seafood warehouses and other businesses. The development caused significant problems for local residents who had to change their ways of life to accommodate the larger community. One particular problem was that many people living near the industrial area could not afford to buy cars or drive to work because roads were too dangerous even for buses then. To solve this problem, Mayor Edith Greene established a free bus system which transported people from central Huntington Park down University Avenue into downtown Los Angeles where they could walk or take public transportation back home
