Huntington Park is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 27,869 at the 2010 census. It is located on the border of Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Huntington Park is bordered by La Verne to the south, Glendale to the east, Pico Rivera to the north, and Woodland Hills to the west. The first settler in what is now Huntington Park was James Witherspoon who settled in 1838. Witherspoon's brother-in-law John Doheny moved from Ireland with his family in 1839 and opened a store along Elm Avenue which became known as Doheny's Wells . In 1841, George Westphal bought 100 acres (40 ha) of land from developer Elias Howe for $1,000 . He named his new town after himself – Huntington Park . In 1863, General Alfred Tilton founded Tilton copper mine here on nearby Ojai Mesa. Gold was discovered here on July 14th, 1867 when prospectors found several underground veins of gold ore just below surface near present-day Main Street and North avenues. Mining began soon after withULTScoop coming online in 1870 and production increasing until it peaked in 1886 with an average yield of over 1 million tonnes/year! By 1895 ULScoop had been closed down due to low output prices caused by increased competition elsewhere.
