Huntington Park, California is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. It was founded in 1885 by millionaire Elias W. Huntington and his family as a retirement community for the wealthy elite of Southern California. The name "Huntington" comes from the Spanish word "húngaro," which means "to grind." The Huntington Park neighborhood now located in Riverside was once part of the original settlement. It was named after Elias W. Huntington's main residence on El Camino Real, also known as White Sands Trail. The road that runs through Huntington Park today was originally called Red Mountain Road and crossed over to what is now Elmwood Avenue at about the time that White Sands Trail ended near Pasadena Hills Golf Course. The first post office in Huntington Park was established on March 15, 1889. At its peak population in 1907 there were 1,500 residents living within its boundaries- this number decreased significantly by 1925 when all of southern San Bernardino County became part of Orange County and annexations ceased due to Prohibition laws (see History of Orange County). In 1924, Elias W. Huntington donated land to build a nursing home for patients with tuberculosis at what is now found across from his old home on Elmwood Avenue near Red Mountain Road/Mountain View Boulevard east of Interstate 10 (the current location of Kaiser Permanente) - this gift remains one of the most important philanthropic donations made to an American institution since the turn of the 21st century. The hospital opened its doors on October 1, 1924 and initially served as a primary care facility for patients with TB until it became fully equipped with diagnostic equipment in 1978; then it took on a broader mission including cancer care until it closed in 2000 following national trend towards integrated health systems throughout North America Today much evidence remains for early pioneer settlers who arrived here during this period - including Pottery Barn bricks still lying scattered around property today from construction projects back then such as enlarging an existing garage into a house .
