These units served until 1973 when they were replaced by three brigades which became known as "The Brigade." From 1978-1983 there was only one battalion assigned per brigade so that each brigade could be called up for any mission or deployment at any time. Additionally in 1983 there was an expansion of the reserve program allowing members of local high schools and colleges to become marines if they reached eighteen years old. Since then there have been continuous deployments with no breaks between deployments; this has included deployments throughout both Iraq and Afghanistan where marines have played an important role in both wars. The most recent major deployment took place in October 2017 when marine forces responded to Hurricane Irma following Hurricane Maria. Huntington Park is a town in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 79,822 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of Pasadena Boulevard and south of Hollywood Boulevard. The name "Huntington Park" was given to the community by developers who purchased land in nearby Covina in 1922. The first post office opened in 1923. The first store was built on what is now Lincoln Ave., between Western and Orange Avenues. In 1928, the community became part ofLa Cienega Unified School District; later it became part of La Cañada Flintridge Unified School District In 1957, Huntington Park annexed Gardena to its west; Gardena had been a separate municipality since 1903. On July 15, 1959, Huntington Park voters passed a proposition creating an independent city with its own mayor and councilor system; this resulted in the city's incorporation as Huntington Park on October 1, 1959. At that time there were only seven other incorporated cities in Los Angeles County: Beverly Hills (1902), Claremont (1925), East LA (1945), Westwood (1948), North Hollywood (1951), Carson City (1959) and Torrance (1960). According to the 2010 census, over 78% of the population are White American citizens while Latino make up 20% or so of residents and 7% or less are Black or African American citizens. There are also large numbers of Asian Americans – 12% – and Pacific Islanders/Alaska Natives making up 3%. The percentages for each race vary depending on how detailed information is available about individual residents’ ethnicity data from censuses taken before and after 2008 when Proposition 8 was passed which limits marriage rights for gays & lesbians
Huntington Park was founded in 1887 as a small town on the banks of the San Gabriel River. The community grew rapidly and by 1912, it had reached its peak with a population of over 1,500 people. However, during World War I, Huntington Park became one of the most heavily bombed areas in California due to the munitions dump located nearby. As a result, the community lost much of its infrastructure and population began to decline. In 1960, Huntington Park merged with neighboring El Monte and ceased to exist as an independent municipality.
