Huntington Park is a city in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 65,272 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–San Bernardino Metropolitan Statistical Area. The park is located on the eastern edge of San Bernardino and includes much of what is now downtown Riverside. The first white settler in what became Huntington Park was Thomas Hines in 1871. In 1907, San Bernardino County became an independent county, and Huntington Park annexed parts of its neighbor to the east, making it one municipality with two jurisdictions within one county. When San Bernardino County consolidated with Riverside County in 1995, Huntington Park remained an enclave within that larger entity. Huntington Park’s history began with a small contingent of settlers who arrived during the Gold Rush era in 1851. James Fenton purchased 1/4 acre (0.24 km²) of land near present-day downtown Riverside for $10 on November 15th, 1851 from John Bealand and James Northrop Griggs. By 1865, other pioneer families had followed Fenton to this location and started building homes including those who would form what would become known as The Andrews family: George A., William D., Isaac P., Anna M., Martha J., Harry C., John E.), father & sons (Fritz Wesseling et al.), Julius Griggs (John P.) & Emma (Martha Jane), brothers Checkmarrow & Arthur Griggs (Arthur Wesseling), sisters Sarah Bourgeois & Elizabeth Smith from Ontario and sister Leah Green from Vermont also participated in this early settlement which was called “The Rancho Los Alamitos” because it lay within boundaries set by Mexican Governor Alvarado de las Casas after his victory over American forces at Guadalupe Hill on October 16th previous year.(1) In 1870 – just prior to California becoming a state – prominent Southerner Horace Greeley donated land through Friends Meeting House north of town to build a public square called Arlington Heights which served as the nucleus for today’s Huntington Park.(2) With so many new arrivals came opportunity for business ventures as well; Pioneering store owner Elias Howe built a general store on First Street south side in 1872 which became known as “The Old Place”.(3) However some businesses did not survive such as tailor shop operated by Jobneth Bros./Thompson that closed its doors around 1890.(4) During these early years there were few services available aside from milk delivered daily by horseback(5).
