Fremont and his squadron sailed into San Francisco Bay to attack Mexican forces under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. A few months later, Commodore David Dixon Porter sailed into San Diego Bay with his squadron to support US Marines assaulting Spanish positions at Yerba Buena Island. The navy presence in California was essential during these early days of US Naval operations in North America. Huntington Park incorporated as a town on December 12, 1866. At this time, the town had only three buildings: a courthouse, jail, and post office. The first mayor was Jno Fenton and the first Selectman was Ebenezer Sibley Jr.. The town’s main industry at this time were agriculture and fishing; however, by 1888 there were two businesses open for business: an druggist and a sawmill. In 1889-90 construction began on what would become known as “the Great Western Railway” which connected Huntington Park with nearby Menlo Park (now Palo Alto).
