The Imperial Beach Air Force Base is home to the United States Air Force's 137th Airlift Wing. The wing provides airlift support for military and civilian missions in California and Nevada. In addition, the wing is responsible for providing transportation for Joint Chiefs of Staff commanders during Operations Neptune Spear and Enduring Freedom. The 137th Airlift Wing has a long history of deploying gift baskets full of local treasures to servicemen and women serving in military or civil units across the country. On November 7, 1941, when America entered World War II, the 137th Airlift Wing was activated at Imperial Beach Army Navy Base as a transport squadron. From there it moved to RAF Molesworth in England where it provided cargo planes and bombers for combat duty against Nazi Germany. After hostilities ended on September 2, 1945, the 137th Airlift Wing returned to San Diego and began operations as an active unit supporting Gov't agencies including Social Services (now known as County social services), Agriculture (now known as Food & Water Development), Fire Department (now known as Homeland Security) and Inter-Agency Communications Center which later became Naval Facilities Engineering Command's Tactical Telecommunications Unit). In 1990, after more than 20 years of service with the USAAF 337th Airlift Group (later renamed "137TH AW" within USAF), it was folded into Headquarters Air Mobility Command's 445th Expeditionary Wing with its stationed at Robins AFB GA until being disbanded on August 31st 2009. Imperial Beach, California is a town located in San Diego County, California. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. Imperial Beach is on both sides of the US-Mexico border and is bordered by Tijuana Municipality to the east and El Cajon to the west. The U.S.–Mexico border forms much of Imperial Beach's coastline. The name "Imperial" comes from Spanish and means "the imperial force." In 1885, General Antonio López de Santa Anna founded what would become Imperial Beach on land that he had purchased from Rancho Del Norte. At first it was just a small trading post with only a few buildings and no beach access. However, over time, more businesses developed in the port town and by 1910 there were 12 stores, 10 restaurants, 4 hotels (2 luxury), 3 boatyards (2 for pleasure boats and 2 for commercial vessels), 8 homes (6 single family dwellings and 4 duplexes), 2 churches (1 Roman Catholic one built in 1904) as well as private residences for officers in army posts scattered throughout inland San Diego County In 1915 Princess Alice of Battenberg donated $10 million towards building an international airport near downtown San Diego which would be called Empire Airport after her husband Prince Alfred of Great Britain; it would serve as a major export center for goods coming into Southern California. With completion of World War II it became an important military base with many suppliers within United States Military forces stationed there including Douglas Aircraft Corporation As early as 1951 plans were underway to develop Naval Air Station Miramar adjacent to I-5 south of town along with other naval installations such as Marine Corps Air Station North Island This ambitious project never materialized due to budgetary constraints but did lead to increased development around Navy Base Miramar without any public input or assistance On December 16th 1941 Japanese bombers attacked Pearl Harbor resulting in 9 American citizens dead including Mayor John D’Alessandro who perished when his home was destroyed; during World War II about 100 Marines died defending America's waterway against attack from Japan . On October 15th 1945 USS Shiloh sunk off shore while escorting convoy KM abstinence 20 miles SSW OF Imperial Beach killing all 11 sailors aboard leaving behind their families member service members have since restored USS Shiloh back into operation providing maritime security services off coast CA

In 1849, the first permanent settlers arrived on Imperial Beach. They were J.D. Payne and his family, who named their land "Beach." The town was founded in 1850 by two brothers, George and John Manson, as a stop on their way to cattle drives in Oregon. By 1870, the town had grown to include a post office, schoolhouse, and sawmill. In 1876, the California Legislature passed an act giving all of San Diego County to Imperial Beach. The town's population peaked at around 2,000 people in 1920; however, it declined rapidly following World War II and has only been climbing steadily since then.
