The United States Army was founded in 1775, the first American military force. The modern U.S. Army was formed in 1802 and has served continuously since then, with a current strength of over 142,000 troops. The Imperial Beach Marines have been a part of the United States Armed Forces since 1898. The unit was activated on December 15th, 1898 as Company A, Second Battalion, Fourth Regiment California Volunteers. The battalion served in various engagements during the Mexican-American War and also participated in the Spanish-American War. In 1903, Company B wasestablished and served with distinction in World War I before being disbanded in 1920. In 1938, Company C was organized and became an all-volunteer marines regiment. The regiment fought in World War II and the Korean Conflict before being disbanded on Okinawa in 1954. In 1971, Company D was raised and served with distinction during the Vietnam War before being disbanded six years later. In 1992, Companies E & F were raised to become marine infantry battalions and serve together until 2006 when they were amalgamated into one battalion under command of Marine Brigadier General Jeffrey Laddington who is currently Commanding Officer at Marine Barracks San Diego where company F is located.

The name came from the Spanish word "imbricada" meaning “incidental junction” because two rivers, the Gaviota and Carpinteria, join here. By 1913, Imperial had grown to become an important commercial center on the Palos Verdes Peninsula due to its location at the mouth of both the Gaviota and Carpinteria Rivers. In 1916, Imperial became part of Mexico City and experienced rapid growth thanks to its access to passenger ships docking at the newly constructed Port of Los Angeles. As a result of its proximity to Mexico City and its coveted maritime resources, Imperial prospered until World War II when it was bombed by American bombers during the war effort. Aftermath The bombing left many buildings damaged or destroyed and has been cited as one of the most devastating wartime raids against civilian targets in U.S. history. In 1946, Imperial reverted back to Mexican hands and experienced continued economic decline until 1990 when it was designated a place for international trade by then-President George H.W. Since 2000, however, there have been mixed fortunes for Imperial Beach with more positive reports from locals about their community than negative stories circulating online about crime rates or traffic congestion.
