The California coast guard has been providing law enforcement, disaster relief, and transportation services on the state's coastline since 1879. In 1914, the first Coast Guard station was established at Imperial Beach to help protect shipping in the area during World War I. The first Coast Guard cutter, HMCS Alert, was constructed in 1926 and served as the primary police vessel for operations along the state's coastline. In 1951, the California coastal guard became a separate agency within the Department of Motor Vehicles. The present day coast guard fleet is made up of over 100 vessels including 12 patrol boats and 10 helicopters. Today's Coast Guard mission includes protecting human life and property along California's 1,000 miles of shoreline fromqvoyous damage caused by storms, pirates, smugglers and other criminals; responding to emergencies including earthquakes or tsunamis; aiding local governments with Search And Rescue operations; making sure that visitors have an enjoyable visit to our beautiful state; and educating citizens about beach safety issues.

The Imperial Beach Coast Guard Museum is the first of its kind in the United States. The museum was founded in 1984 by Captain Harry Helling, an Imperial Beach native and then-Marine Corps officer who served as commanding officer of Company C, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines. The museum contains artifacts from the coast guard’s history dating back to 1892.

The name "Imperial" comes from the Spanish word for "universal." The town was originally called Mission San Diego and it served as a military outpost during the Mexican-American War and later became known for its fishing and boating industries. Other major employers in the town are Kaiser Permanente Medical Center (KPMC), Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E), Qualcomm Incorporated (QCOM), Boeing Co., National Football League's Chargers football team (Clippers), Qualcomm Wireless Communications Inc., American Express OPEN Forum(AEX), Harbor Air Services LLC., Toyota Motor Sales America(TM) U.S., Lockheed Martin Skunk Works ((LMTW)), Cal Poly Pomona Azusa(CALPOMA) Since 1996 when Imperial Beach became an official city within Southern California under Proposition 209, the city has been governed by a mayor/council system with five members elected at-large to serve staggered four-year terms. Elections for Mayor take place every April 4th with no term limits set in law so that anyone can run again regardless of how long they have been mayor or councilmember. The current Mayor is Darrell Steinberg who was elected in November 2017 after serving two terms as Deputy Mayor between 2013-2017 under then-Mayor Kevin Faulconer.

Imperial Beach is a city in Imperial County, California. The population was 18,651 at the 2010 census. It has been nicknamed "The City of Roses" because of the many roses that grow in its streets and avenues. The city is located on the shore of San Diego Bay and includes parts of what are now Orange County and Riverside County. The town of Imperial Beach was founded in 1885 by James Irvine, who purchased 7 acres (2 km2) from the Spanish Mission Santa Ysabel de la Laguna for $275. In 1886, Irvine built a small wooden lighthouse on Point Conception Island to warn mariners about potential danger close to shore. In 1889, he donated land for a public school system which became known as Baldwin High School. In 1925, he donated an additional 5 acres (20 km2) for a new hospital which became known as Kaiser Permanente Hospital named after him. In 1933, Pacific Gas and Electric Company relocated its gas processing plants from Encinitas to Imperial Beach due to competition from Southern California Edison Company's new Palo Alto plant. The company also constructed a large shopping mall called Empire Shopping Center on Hwy 101 outside of town boundaries in order to serve the growing community. In 1945, following World War II when Loyola University Los Angeles moved its main campus from downtown Los Angeles to North Hollywood, Imperial Beach began experiencing rapid growth as people flocked there to escape draft-dodging United States troops occupying their home country during the war years. By 1957 it had reached 507 residents; by 1990 it had grown to 1,814 residents with over 100 businesses clustered within one central area including restaurants like Red Lobster and Subway sandwich stores near Interstate 805Exit 69A). At this point it was decided that an annex would be developed adjacent to Kaiser Permanente Hospital so that more services could be offered within easy reach for both students and staff members who typically lived off-campus or commuting long distances into town each day; today's incarnation is known as "Imperial Drive". During this time period several high-rise buildings were constructed such as: Westchester Towers (now part of Marriott Marquis), Montecito towers (now part of One Tree Hill Resort), Regency Park Towers (now part of Trump International Hotel & Tower) - all while still providing ample room for parking lot expansion without negatively impacting nearby homes or businesses... Today's downtown core offers much more than just retail outlets however with multiple theaters/theatre complexes along with restaurants/bars/nightclubs all catering specifically towards locals & tourists alike making it one stop shop for entertainment in town!
The Imperial Beach Naval Shipyard was a shipbuilding and repair facility on the Pacific Coast of California. The site is now part of the San Diego Padres baseball team's training camp complex, and is also home to UCSD's Marine Corps League. The first naval vessel built at the Naval Shipyard was the USS Constitution in 1846.
