Imperial Beach is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. It is located on the coast of Pacific Beach, about 1 mile south of Imperial Beach's downtown district. The first coffee beans were roasted in 1875 by José Bautista Indurain and his brother Francisco at their family farm called "El Cementerio de la cruz" on the present-day site of Pacific Beach. In 1896, Don Benito Mariscal opened an Italian restaurant and roastery on Fourth Street known as "Mariscal's". In 1899, Lorenzo Marquez established a grocery store and cafe next door to El Cementerio de la cruz where he sold coffee beans direct from his farm to customers through a small window. In 1907, Harry Fenton organized a group of businessmen from Imperial Valley who bought land adjacent to Fenton's grove of trees near what is now North Torrey Pines Boulevard (later I-5) in order to establish a new town called North Coast. On July 8, 1907 they voted 3–1 to name their new town Imperial Beach after Emperor Meiji of Japan because it seemed like an appropriate place for such an important naval base. One early resident was Averell Harriman who had come from New York City with his wife Alice Purefoy Harriman when they vacationed on the island of Isla Mujeres off the Mexican coast in 1916 while Harriman was being investigated for war crimes by Mexico’s newly formed government

Imperial Beach is bordered by Newport Beach to the east, Seal Beach to the west and Yorba Linda to the north. The city has a rich history dating back to 1887 when it was founded as an agricultural town by Europeans working on Rancho San Clemente which later became part of Mexico City. In 1919, it became an incorporated municipality under English law following its annexation by Orange County. From 1970 until 2013, Emperor’s beaches were managed by the Marine Mammal Research Institute (MPRI) which also manages nearby Dana Point National Wildlife Refuge etc.. Today Imperial Beach is one of Southern California’s leading tourist destinations with year-round attractions such as surfing, fishing, swimming and camping; while its climate provides plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and biking.

In 1883, the United States Congress created Imperial Beach as a resort town on California's southern coast. The town was named for Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria, who had been visiting the area for health reasons. In 1894, the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey began surveying Mexican territory adjacent to California and decided that Imperial Beach would be its western terminus. The survey also recommended adding an artificial harbor to the town in order to help it become a port for goods entering and leaving Mexico City. On May 3, 1895, the first official buildings were built in the town: a hotel and store complex called "The Empress." Imperial Beach grew rapidly during World War I due to military activity in nearby San Diego County and Naval Base Point Loma (now known as Miramar). After the war ended, businesses increased their involvement in local affairs; they formed a city council which held elections every two years until 1972 when they were replaced by an elected mayor/council system under Proposition 13. From 1945-1948, Imperial Beach was home to America's only nuclear weapons testing site at Bikini Atoll; after that test series ended, Mother Earth became responsible for maintaining Bikini Atoll’s lush marine life. Since 1974, Imperial Beach has been served by one of Southern California's largest beach towns - with more than 12 miles of white sand beaches extending from shoreline to shoreline - making it one of most popular tourist destinations in the state.
The city of Imperial Beach was founded on December 26, 1887 by Marcus Daly and his wife Jennie. The first post office in the city was established on February 2, 1888. In 1893, the City of Imperial Beach passed an ordinance establishing a fire department and defining rights for residents. The city also passed an ordinance establishing limits on lot sizes, building permits, and zoning laws. In 1916, the California Legislature approved a bill creating Imperial Beach as a municipally-owned beach resort town with voting privileges in the county government. On September 1, 1916, voters in Imperial Beach voted to become part of Alameda County. On November 3, 1926, the Town of Imperial Beach incorporated as a city with full powers to pass its own ordinances and make its own decisions without interference from the County government. On January 1, 1930, State Senator Harry Burdick (D) authored Senate Bill 5 which became law legalizing gambling within 100 miles of any state Capitol site - including Imperial Beach. This event is often cited as one of the earliest examples of legalized casino gambling in California. As part of this move towards legality and tourism development at Navy Pier Boulevard and other areas throughout Alameda County over time; businesses such as casinos started moving into what had been once known as "the black hole" for Muni transportation into downtown San Francisco proper - making it easier for tourists to gamble away their money while they're stuck on their way home from work or out celebrating some happy event! In 1941 when World War II began; many jobs were lost due to rationing programs that limited production at factories across America - but not those in Northern California like Naval Base Coronado where munitions manufacturing took place right up until Pearl Harbor led to mass layoffs there! So many workers who would have otherwise gone into combat were kept home instead because there simply wasn't enough available labor! And so while most people don't remember it today; during World War II Naval Base Coronado provided more than 4500 jobs that supported our military efforts!
