There is no question that coffee has been a mainstay of the American diet for centuries. However, its history in Imperial Beach stretches back to at least 1896. That year, German immigrant Wilhelm Kapp set up his first coffee shop in what is now known as the Town Square. Soon after, other Germans began opening their own cafes and restaurants throughout the town. Today, there are over 30 coffee shops located in Imperial Beach and its surrounds! The first coffee shop in Imperial Beach was called The Coffee House on Main Street. It was opened by Wilhelm Kapp and his wife Gertrude (nee Wagner). At that time, it was the only place in town where you could purchase coffee beans and cups. The Coffee House continued to serve delicious cup of Joe until 1920 when it burned down. In 1924, Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria offered to buy all of the stock in J&R Coffee Company for $2 million dollars ($10 million today!). Although at first hesitant, J&R agreed to sell and opened two new stores - one near North Park Boulevard and another on State Street - across from Kaiser’s Palace! This marks the beginning of an era where Empire City would be home to some of California’s most beloved brands – Starbucks®, Dunkin’ Donuts®, Caribou Coffee®, Peet’s Tea & Coffee®, Dutch Bros., La Boulange ® , etc. Today, there are more than 175 businesses operating within walking distance of each other in Imperial Beach – making it one of America's busiest ports! The history of gourmet coffee begins in Imperial Beach, California. The first gourmet coffee house in the area was the Coffee House on Nautilus Way, which opened in 1938. In 1948, a second coffee house, the Coffee Shop on Pacific Avenue, also opened. In 1959, a third coffee house, The Gourmet Lounge on Wimpole Street, opened. In 1978, a fourth coffee house, The French Press Cafe on State Street became operational. In 1984–1985, two more coffeehouses were added to the scene: The Dutch Treat Café and The Roastery at 5th and Mission Streets. In 1990–1991 a fifth coffeehouse – Starbuck's Old World Cafe – joined the scene. In 1995–1996 another five-spot was opened: Two Hands Café & Bar with its own roast lab and café space overlooking San Diego Bay; as well as Pizzeria Bianco (now called Dino's Pizza) and Cafe Nonna (now called Donatella's). Additionally in 1998 there was an opening of La Colombe espresso bar inside of City Hall plaza in downtown Imperial Beach with its own roast lab and tasting room - making it one of only three such bars in town. Today there are over twenty-five restaurants that serve gourmet coffee across all price ranges from small businesses to large chains; eleven of these restaurants have their own roasts shops which offer unique blends or Single Origin roasts from various origins around the world (Austria*, Brazil*, China*, Colombia*, Dominican Republic* ,[5]).

This museum tells the story of the USS Constitution, which was built in 1831 and fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as an American warship during World War II. The USS Constitution Museum also has a collection of cannons and other historical artifacts from various wars. Another reminder of history is the battleship California. Built in 1931, this battleship was used in both World Wars I and II. It was also used as a training ship for Navy personnel. As part of its renovation project, it will be open to visitors from May 1 through September 30, 2020.
In 1891, the Imperial Beach Board of Directors voted to name the city after Emperor Napoleon I of France. The decision was made due to the large number of French immigrants living in and around Imperial Beach at that time.
