Imperial Beach is a city located in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 67,653 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego-Tijuana metropolitan area. As of 2019, Imperial Beach has an estimated population of over 100,000 people and is one of the fastest growing cities in Southern California. The first permanent settlement in Imperial Beach was made on October 16, 1885 when 51 workers from Oregon arrived at La Jolla Cove to build a US$5 million wharf on what would become Fort Point State Park today. In 1886 two families purchased land north of present-day Dock Street for $1 per acre (0.50 km2). The town site was surveyed by Wm. Bendix and named after Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria–Hungary because he donated land for it. The first post office opened in 1888 with Wm. Halsey as postmaster/instructor; it moved to its current location east of Dock Street in 1895 after Halsey's death In 1903 the name change to Imperial Beach due to objections from residents who alleged that Kaiser Wilhelm II had given them this name during World War 1 (the war’s main focus) while they were still under occupation by Germany Theaters and other businesses opened soon thereafter and construction began on what would become known as “The Pearl” which served as both a harbor and commercial center until 1914 when battleships USS Arizona and USS Oklahoma collided near Naval Base Coronado resulting in extensive damage to both ships which caused their withdrawal from service In 1916 developer Clarence Kapp organized what became known as the "Kapp Colony" housing developments around First Coast Boulevard between Sailor Boulevard and Third Avenue including now-shuttered Empire Landmark Tower Kapp developed these developments himself rather than relying on outside investors although he did receive some financial help from his father Friedrich Kapp whose company built most of Los Angeles' early water systems In 1924 Kapp built his last development - North Harbor - which served as a military airfield until 1945 After World War Two ended there was little demand for large open spaces within Imperial Beach so much work was done developing small towns throughout southern San Diego County such as El Cajon Mesa which had a population over 10,000 before 1920 . Many small farmers who operated out of their homes continued doing so into the 21st century Here you can find examples like: Villa Hermosa Estates off First Coast Boulevard between Second Avenue South and Third Avenue West serving mainly elderly residents with gardens or poolside villas complete with servants quarters . Today there are only few remnants remaining such as: A couple houses on Third Avenue West just south enough away from Interstate 5 so that you can see them but otherwise all farmland . Lombard Way continues past Torrey Pines avenue completely surrounded by residential neighborhoods today Interstate 5 remains busy allowing cars to drive straight through any openings along the fence without stopping
