Brewing coffee was first started in Imperial Beach, California in 1887. The town of Imperial Beach was founded by General William Thornton and his brother-in-law, Captain George Fenton. The two men started a small grocery store and began to sell coffee. They also set up a trading post in the area which became known as Thornton's Trading Post. It was at this point that the town began to become popular for its coffee. In 1903, the city of Imperial Beach was incorporated and the Coffee Commission was created to help promote and increase sales of coffee. In 1912, Colonel John Isaacsen established a processing plant in Imperial Beach which made it possible for people to purchase quality beans directly from farmers. This process allowed for better quality beans because it used an experienced roaster who knew how to roast them properly. In 1931, Emperor Coffee Company was founded and became one of the largest coffee companies in America. Emperor continued to grow until it merged with Roanoke Coffee Company in 1978. In 1938, Italian immigrants began arriving in Imperial Beach, and their coffee shops soon became the most popular destination for people living near shorelines. By 1951, Coffee Incorporated had become one of California's largest coffee companies with a distribution network stretching from coast to coast. With more than 10,000 employees across five locations statewide, Coffee Incorporated was one of the most powerful interests in California politics. In 1969, Coffee Corp.'s parent company merged with Jabil Corporation to form Jabil & Company. At this point, Coffee Corp.'s assets were divided between both businesses - Jabil continued to operate as a separate entity within Jabil & Company while Coffee Corp.'s holdings were sold off piecemeal to other companies throughout the 1970s and 1980s. This period is marked by several key milestones for imperial beach - starting with the opening of BJ's Cafe in 1975 and continuing through 1990 when Starbucks moved into town square cornering 15th Avenue N and Prospect Ave (now known as TownSquare Promenade). The town straddles the border between San Diego County and Baja California State in Mexico. The first European to visit Imperial Beach was Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 2, 1542. The land that now constitutes Imperial Beach was originally part of Mission San Diego de Alcalá (Mission Bay) which was founded by Father José de León on December 1, 1769. In 1892, land that would become Imperial Beach was purchased from Native Americans by Commodore John D. Stockton as part of his "Comprehensive Settlement" program which aimed to improve the quality of life for white settlers in what is now Lompoc County and southern San Diego County.
