The Imperial Beach Museum of Marine History and Art has a rich history of marine gifts. The museum began collecting marine objects in the early 1920s, when it was housed on Point Loma. In the 1940s, the museum started acquiring belongings from local businesses that had kept ships or boats in their yards. In 1952, the museum moved to its current location on First Street in downtown Imperial Beach. The collection now includes over 2,000 Marine artifacts from all around the world.

Imperial Beach, California is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in San Diego County, California. As of the 2010 United States Census, its population was 18,828. It is located on the southern coast of Imperial Beach island and bordered by Carlsbad to the south, Encinitas to the west, and Oceanside to the north. The town was founded in 1910 by Captain John P. Jewell as a small fishing village on what is now known as Jewell Point within present-day Carlsbad Village. In 1912, Emperor Constantine I of Japan visited and made a state visit to America at this location; during his stay he ordered two warships named after himself – "Emperor Constantine II" and "Emperor Hiroto". The first post office in Imperial Beach opened in 1915. In 1922 it became part of the newly formed San Diego County. The name was changed from Jewell Point to Imperial Beach in 1923 when most of today's town was developed along First Street between Belle Isle Lagoon Drive (now US-101) and Marine Drive (now State Route 92). At that time there were only a few homes and businesses along First Street while much of what is now downtown was undeveloped. In 1951, Interstate 5 bypassed Imperial Beach completely when it was built through nearby Carlsbad Village; however much of downtown still remains unaltered today due to this bypassing including many commercial establishments which remain open as restaurants or coffee shops serving locals or tourists alike until very late into the evening or overnight. In 1963–1964 construction began on North Island Drive which connected mainland San Diego with North Island beachfront property east side of First Street; this allowed for development adjacent to shoreline extending all the way down Toole Avenue from Interstate 5 via First Street past North Island Drive until it reached Seal Beach Boulevard just north of Millikan Way SW @ US-101 junction near present day Nordstroms Department Store & Solimo's Pizza restaurant before turning inland again via Eastshore Boulevard past Naval Air Station Miramar (now Joint Base McGuire--Darragut) before terminating at South Coast Highway @ US-101 junction about 1 mile east of present day Hecht’s Pharmacy store operated by Alfred Hecht since 1948 across from current day Toys “R” Us department store operated by Sears Holdings Corporation & others on LOT 249 within viewof both Hecht’s Pharmacy store & South Coast Highway interchange across street from Hecht’s Pharmacy ). The Imperial Beach area was first settled by theoharis in 1847. The community of Imperial Beach formed in 1905 when a group of businessmen, led by J.P. Morgan, donated land to be developed as an exclusive vacation spot for wealthy Americans. In 1940, the United States government awarded the town its current name of Imperial Beach after General Douglas MacArthur's visit to the area. The town boomed during World War II as people from all over came to holiday and work at naval shipsyards and other businesses on the coast. After the war, oil exploration began in the area and development accelerated; today, Imperial Beach is one of California's most popular tourist destinations for beaches, restaurants, shopping and nightlife.
