The Imperial Valley National Guard (IVNG) was first activated in 1933 as the Infantry Battalion of the California National Guard. The battalion was redesignated in 1940 as the Regiment, then in 1951 as the brigade. In 1957, the brigade became an regiment and in 1959, a brigade Combat Team. On September 9, 1961, the Brigade Combat Team was redesignated the armored infantry battalion and on October 1, 1961, it became an armored divisional combat team. On November 2nd 1967 armordivision combat team became an army divisional combat team. As of September 30th 2020 there are over 350 active duty battalions and brigades within Army Reserve components including IFOR-Syria (active since 1973), XVIII Airborne Corps (activated 2006), II Mountain Division (activated 2009) and III Armored Brigade Group ( activation date unknown). The active duty military forces have deployed to Afghanistan 3 times now with over 950 soldiers deployed worldwide

The history of Imperial, California starts with the Spanish Empire. The first European to visit this area was Francisco de la Raza who called it La Provincia del Califato (Province of the Californias). Construction on a ranch began in 1769 and by 1821, General Manuel Nieto had built a town named after himself, San Diego. In 1848, Mexico gained independence from Spain and naming their new country El Salvador became the official name for the region. In 1849, San Diego was divided into two parts by Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna and given to American claimants as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which ended the Mexican War of Independence. The newly acquired land became known as Rancho San Diego de Alcalá y Tejada (Rancho Alcalá and Tejon Valley). In 1850, a post office was established at Rancho San Diego de Alcalá y Tejada and in 1861, an irrigation canal was completed that would later be renamed Imperial Canal. By 1870, there were over 50 businesses in downtown San Diego employing over 1,500 people. The growth of trade brought about increased competition between businesses which led to joblessness among workers during the Great Depression. Despite these challenges though, business continued to thrive through World War II when military production increased due to war effort demands across North America. After World War II ended came changes for Imperial because developers wanted more vacation properties in what had once been a working-class community full of small farmers and fishermen. Businesses like hotels/motels/casinos flourished while prices for goods mounted because demand stayed high following recessionary times throughout much of the 1980s until 1990s; however many residents lost their jobs during that time as well leading to increasing rates for housing prices statewide as well as increase in crime rates overall within Imperial County (). At present day there are few businesses left open within downtownSanDiego aside from one restaurant which is only open during peak tourist season
The first permanent European settlement in Imperial Valley was founded by the Padre Company on December 6, 1846. The company land included what is now the city of Vista and the county seat of San Bernardino County. On January 14, 1847, Mexican nationals Juana Diaz and José Gomez sold 2,000 acres (800 hectares) of land to American settlers for $2 per acre. The grant was made under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On July 29, 1850,250 more Americans arrived in Imperial Valley from Oregon via Stagecoach routes through central California. They were led by Captain Elisha Brougham who had been sent by Ulysses S. Grant as an envoy to try to negotiate a peace treaty between Mexico and America. A town called Fillmore was founded near present-day Loma Prieta National Monument on October 16, 1850 by Colonel John Cranch with help from General Joshua Sherman and Commodore James Buchanan. In 1861–1862, during the American Civil War (the war between the United States of America and Spain), many soldiers were stationed in and around Imperial Valley because there were no other places available for them to go until they could be reinforcements for their armies in California. The men built up a strong military presence that continued even after the war ended; today there are still military installations throughout Imperial Valley including Camp Pendleton within Angeles National Forest and Fort Irwin within Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton park which is home to Marine One Helicopter services as well as various other military facilities worldwide
