On December 6, 1877, the United States Army Garrison Imperial, California was established. The garrison consisted of Companies A, B and C of the 11th Infantry Regiment. It was later redesignated as Company E of the 20th Infantry Regiment on April 1, 1898. On July 9, 1913, Company E was redesignated Company H (11th Infantry) and then again on October 15, 1951 as Company G (20th Infantry).
In the late 1800s, Imperial County was a vast and sparsely populated area located in southern California. The only industry that thrived here was cattle ranching. In 1892, the first railroad reached this part of the state, and soon after, goods started flowing into and out of Imperial County. Many historians believe that this name choice was made because at that time there were no other settlements nearby with such an illustrious name – it seemed like something worth striving for! Although it may be difficult today to imagine life without modern conveniences like electricity and cars, back then things were much more simple. For example, one man would often go weeks without seeing his family because he might need to leave Rancho del Norte every day for work on his ranch or farm!
