The history of gourmet coffee in Imperial, California runs back to the early 1900s when a small group of farmers began to grow coffee on their property. The first beans were roasted and ground by these farmers themselves and sold through small local merchants. During World War II, the war production boom brought new entrepreneurs into the coffee business. These entrepreneurs started to roast and grind their own beans, having learned from the veterans who had been returned home with fresh-ground coffee in their possession. In addition, they began to packaging their coffee as sachets or jars for sale at local markets. As time went on, more people came into the coffee business in Imperial. One of these entrepreneurs was William Wiltz, who purchased a large farm near Imperial in 1951. He soon began to sell his beans nationally through his company Wiltz Coffee Company. In 1978, Wiltz Coffee merged with Roasters Inc., which became one of the largest roasters in the United States. The first coffee house in Imperial, California was opened by two German immigrants, Heinrich and Johanna Müller, on October 3, 1876. The Müllers were the first coffee shopkeepers in Imperial. They operated a small grocery store next door to their home until they moved to their current location in 1901. In 1916, the Empire Coffee Company was founded by Harry Swayne and J.C. Whitney as a cooperative of independent businessmen from Imperial and nearby El Sobrante. The company became one of the most successful in California with its signature imperial blend of coffee which has been sold throughout the state.
The history of Imperial, California begins with the arrival of Spanish traders in 1769. The area that is now Imperial was part of present-day Alta California. After years of conflict and struggles for control, the Spanish were finally able to gain control over this area in 1821. They named their new colony San Francisco de Asís after Jesus Christ, who they thought would help them govern this land. In 1846, Mexico gained independence from Spain and renamed themselves Mexico City. With Mexican sovereignty now in question, the United States began to claim all of Alta California as its own. In 1850, the US Congress passed a bill creating the state of California and giving it to the people of America. From then on, Californians fought for control over their newfound land, which would eventually lead to what is known as The Great American Gold Rush. In 1862, General Philip Sheridan led an army across Northern California into what is now Nevada and Arizona to fight against Confederate forces during the Civil War. This action helped bring about significant changes within both America and California; it was one of the first times that soldiers had ever invaded these regions successfully. Afterward, many farmers turned their attention towards gold mining in what is now Nevada and Arizona because it was easier to get access to these resources than other parts of Alta California. Theovered mines became increasingly important during this time because they allowed people more access to money than ever before; thus stimulating an even greater demand for gold throughout both America and Europe. During World War I (1914-1918), many factories were built in nearby Los Angeles due to the huge influx of war workers; however, few people realized how important Empire actually was until later on when it lost its economic importance due to population growth in LOS ANGELES AND THE REST OF CALIFORNIA instead

The area now known as Imperial, California was first settled by the Tongva people in the late 18th century. The region was part of Mexican land grants given to various adventurers and military officers during the Mexican-American War. In 1847, during the Gold Rush, a group of prospectors led by John C. Fremont discovered gold on an unnamed river near present-day Anacapa Island. The discovery caused a rush of settlers to come to the area and it became one of the most heavily populated areas in California. In 1853, Emperor Pio Pico granted Rancho San Francisco del Rey to James Fenton for his own use and development. In 1860, Fenton sold portions of Rancho San Francisco del Rey to George Wickersham for $10,000. Wickersham developed it into what is today Imperial County. A year later, Wickersham sold sections of Rancho Santa Fe de la Frontera to Juana Bautista Carrillo for $15,000. Carrillo founded Mission Dolores in 1872 on an island in San Pedro Bay south of present-day downtown Imperial City. The mission served as a showcase for Spanish culture and education within California; it also acted as a center for trade with surrounding countries such as Japan and Peru. During World War II, Imperial County played a significant role in the war effort by providing military supplies and personnel; however, due to its limited resources (the county has only 2 square miles of land), there was little that could be done offensively or defensively outside of maintaining law and order within its borders. After World War II ended, many businesses closed down due to competition from neighboring counties that had larger coffers and more expendable manpower; however, some small businesses did continue operations until the early 1990s when they were taken over by other companies or abandoned altogether because their lands were flooded or burned off by recent rainsstorms). The first Europeans to sight Imperial Valley were Spanish traders in the late 16th century. The area was part of Bernardino de Garza's mission land grant to the Friars Minor in 1545. In 1846, California became a U.S. territory following the Mexican-American War and California was added to the Union as a state on September 14, 1850. The name "Imperial" came from Spain because it included all of Alta California and parts of Baja California.
