The Imperial County of California is located in the north-central region of the United States, bounded on the east by Nevada and Oregon, on the west by Arizona and New Mexico, and on the south by Texas. The land that now makes up Imperial was first claimed by Spanish settlers in 1769, when they invaded northern California. The area became part of Mexico after its independence from Spain in 1821. In 1848, following Mexican–American War (1846–48), California became an American state via a Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As a result of this change in status, most Mexican land ceded to the United States as part of that treaty – except for about two million acres (0.8 km2) that were given to Fresno County as part of Rancho San Juan de la Cruz grantee). By 1900 there were more than 1 million people living in what is now Imperial County; however, only 6 percent were farmers while 92 percent were employed in industry or services such as manufacturing or construction. During World War II (1939-1945), Southern California’s commercial center saw dramatic growth thanks to wartime demand for aircraft parts and other military supplies; however, much of this development came about because little else was happening near Los Angeles proper. This situation changed with World War II's end when Germany declared war on America; once America had defeated Nazi Germany it began seeking allies throughout Europe which led to Soviet Union occupying eastern Austria and Hungary before moving into Czechoslovakia where they established a communist government including substantial Russian influence over local affairs. Fremont, who believed that California would become an empire like Russia or China. By 1910, the population of Imperial had reached 103,651 people and it is now estimated that about 60% of its current residents were born within its borders. The history of Imperial begins with ranching activity on what are today known as Rancho San Jose de Almagro (later Rancho La Selva) and Rancho San Francisco de Asís (later Rancho Flores). These areas were part of what is now Contra Costa County before becoming part of Imperial in 1849. At first there were only small farmers who grew grapes and other vegetables; however, over time more businesses opened up such as mercantile stores and hotels along with mines that produced silver and gold. Many famous Californians began their lives here including General Grant and President Ulysses S. Grant; both men were born in this area while serving in Mexico City as military officers during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). After California gained statehood in 1850, many entrepreneurs came to Midland Valley looking for new opportunities; this included George Wickersham who founded Wickersham & Company textile factories near Petaluma in 1855. During much of the 20th century there was significant Growth Industry Development throughout all parts of Empire Countys economy – Agriculture: grain production increased 50%, cattle raisers tripled their acreage between 1916-1927 Manufacturing/Services: shipyards built at Point Reyes National Seashore (1925), got underway at Beaumont Enterprise Shipbuilding Corporation's shipyard on Carquinez Strait (1928), then numerous others Mining/Metals: silver output rose 350% between 1860-1900 while gold output quadrupled during same period Educational institutions: Southern Pacific Railroad constructed a main line through town providing access east coast markets for agricultural products grown by local farmers
The first European settlement in Imperial County was made in 1821 by Captain Francisco Lopez. The location of the current town of Imperial, California was chosen for its strategic position between the missions at San Diego and Monterey on the central coast. In 1848, General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo established aMilitary Post at Rancho San Antonio de la Frontera, which became part of the newly created Republic of California. The name "Imperial" was given to a portion of Alameda County that lay within what is now Imperial Valley. On February 14, 1850, Congress passed an act creating Los Angeles County as a county seat with Alameda as its eastern boundary. In 1853, Mexico ceded all but part of Alameda and Contra Costa counties to the United States as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The remaining portions were annexed by California in 1859 and 1865 respectively. On July 24, 1870, when San Francisco was re-established as a city after having been platted as part of an effort to contain Mexican immigration, Mayor George W. Howe proposed that President Ulysses S. Grant rename the City Park in honor of John Culicat (1815-1881), who had been landowner and developer in Northern California for over twenty years before becoming governor in 1868 and then mayor from 1871-72 under American rule until his death one year later at age fifty-four due to yellow fever pandemic sweeping through Southern California at that time. However no action was taken on this proposal until 1886 when incorporation papers were filed with the county recorder's office for Chula Vista making it officially known as "Imperial". On November 17th 1893 Governor Frank Lowden signed into law An Act amendatory thereto providing for annexation by Orange County whereby most or all land west of State Route 52 including present day El Sobrante and Pleasanton were annexed forming today's western border with Anaheim Hills also east being added as well making ImperialCounty more populous than ever before despite predictions made during earlier growth spurt leading up to annexation that would result in less population growth within boundaries originally delineated just east/westof SR#52 primarily because agricultural production within unincorporated areas had become so dominate compared to recent suburban development outside those boundaries; however plans have since changed again following recent housing boom around El Sobrante/Pleasanton area where new subdivisions are being developed much closer to IH 10 & SR#52 currently majority Latino
