When the first coffee beans were grown in Imperial County, California, on October 5th, 1870, people knew it was special. The small town of Imperial was founded by farmers who grew and processed coffee. In 1875, the first commercially successful coffee roaster in America opened its doors in Imperial. The company continued to grow and succeed until the late 1940s whencoffee production went into decline due to technological advances. In 1955, a group of entrepreneurs decided to start a new coffee business in Imperial County. They named their business Coffee City and started marketing their beans all over the United States. Coffee City soon became world-renowned for its high quality coffee products. In 1984, Coffee City merged with two other companies to form what is now known as Peet's Coffee Company. During the past few decades, numerous innovations have taken place within the industry that have made espresso one of the most popular beverage choices on Earth today. By 1930, Imperial Coffee had become one of the largest commercial producers of premium coffee in the United States. During World War II, Imperial Coffee produced millions of gallons of war munitions needed for American industry. The company remained active until 1959 when it merged with two other companies to form SAE International Corporation (SAE). That year saw an extensive remodeling of both its factory and headquarters which helped make Empire one of Silicon Valley's most innovative corporations during that time period. Since then, Empire Coffee has continued its legacy as a leading producer of high-quality coffee products across many different markets around the world. Today, they continue production at their old Sacramento headquarters while expanding into new countries around the world
The history of Imperial, California is one that dates back to the early 19th century. The area that makes up today’s Imperial was first settled by people from Mexico who were fleeing the Mexican Revolution. The region that would become Imperial was part of what is now southern California. In 1836, the Mission San Diego de Alcala was built in what is now downtown Imperial. This mission was a gifts from Spain to America in order to promote trade between the two countries. In 1849, after years of Spanish occupation and local resistance, American settlers arrived in what is today Imperial. At this time, much of what is now Imperial was still part of Mexico. Many pioneers who came to California during this time were interested in opening up new lands for farming and ranching. One such man who made an impact on the growth of Imperial was John Wesley Smith Sr., also known as “Jocko” or “Jacky” because he worked on cattle drives into Mexico City every summer for his family. Smith determined that there must be a place for American farmers and ranchers in central California, and he founded the town of Simi Valley in 1852 as a way to provide such a community with goods and services necessary for its continued growth. In 1861, during World War II, Emperor County became part of United States Army Air Forces Central Command (USAAF C-47 Flying Fortress No 11). A squadron assigned to Empire Airport (later renamed Edwards AFB) provided air defense over Los Angeles County during World War II. After the war ended, Emperor County reverted back to Mexican control; however, it remained under US military jurisdiction until 1959 when it became an independent county within California. Empire has been home to many businesses and families since its incorporation as a city in 1909; those days are long gone but not forgotten! Today’s residents are proud Midwesterners who treasure their history and culture while livinginoneofthe most diverse places on Earth!

The company became one of the most important in American history and continues to be a major player today.
In 1846, the United States acquired California from Mexico. The region was then divided into three parts – Alta California, Baja California and Imperial Valley. In 1861, following the American Civil War, the eastern half of Alta California became part of the Union while the western half became part of Mexico. As a result, there was no direct connection between these two halves of America untilafter Mexican Independence in 1912. The area that is now Imperial County was first settled by Anglo-Saxon farmers in 1847-48. At that time it included most of what is now Riverside County and some adjacent counties including San Bernardino and Orange Counties. Ranchos were granted to individuals or families who managed their land and livestock for a period of 20 years or more. After rancho ownership expired, the land reverted to public domain. In 1851-52, a group of six Anglo-American men set out from La Jolla on horseback to explore this new country which they called "The Land That Was". They traveled along present day Interstate 5 until they reached Bakersfield on September 12th, 1851 After exploring this undeveloped land for several months they returned home with reports that they had found fertile soil and cattle grazing areas in what would eventually become Imperial County On January 1st, 1850 within one year after settler John Cushing arrived at Rancho Miramonte (now known as Gadsden) he filed an application with US Government for a Donation Lands Claim #27 on behalf of himself and his party consisting of eight others - four men (Cushing, James Kenedy Sr., Job McDowell), two women (Fanny Wright and Anna Maria Smith) Bakerfield progressed quickly becoming an important seaport due to its location at Wharf Bay on San Diego Bay which allowed goods destined for overseas markets to be unloaded here without having to go through ports such as Yokohama or Manila
The California Gold Rush of 1849 brought rapid development to Imperial County and its surrounding areas. As pioneers rushed into the region for gold, they left behind a legacy of buildings and infrastructure that still persists today. In 1848, prospectors discovered new gold in what is now Imperial County. With little warning, settlers began moving into the area, filling up the available land with their newfound wealth. By 1850, the population of Imperial County had reached 400 people. The rush to find gold turnedocoal dust into money and created an intense economy that boosted local businesses and families. One key player in this development was James Ewing who ran a store on Main Street in downtown San Diego during the early years of the Gold Rush. His business allowed traders from across California to sell goods at his store without leaving their homes. This social network helped preserve trade between different parts of the state by helping to keep prices low and creating opportunities for entrepreneurs like Ewing to prosper.
