There is no place quite like Imperial, California. The city of 90,000 people nestled in the middle of a vast agricultural region was founded in 1847 by General Mariano Vallejo and his wife, Isabel Pico. It quickly became a center for ranching and mining operations as well as an important stop on the Oregon Trail. The city quickly grew into a major cultural and commercial center during the 19th century. In 1870, it was named the capital of California after Governor John C. Fremont declared it so. The city’s great hotels such as the Palace Hotel and Hotel Capitol were built to accommodate visitors from all over the United States and abroad. During World War II, Imperial played an important role in helping to control Japanese-controlled areas of North America. The city was also home to one of Army Air Forces’ largest airfields, known as Empire Airport. After the war, Imperial experienced some growth but never regained its former prominence as a cultural and economic center until recent decades when new businesses have begun to take hold and infrastructure has been rebuilt. Today, Imperial is another thriving community with rich history that offers plenty for residents and tourists alike to enjoy.
The area now known as Imperial, California was first settled by the Ohlone people in about 825 A.D. The Ohlone were a Native American tribe and their culture is still remembered today. They used the land for fishing and hunting, but also constructed some of the first permanent structures in what is now Imperial County. In 1846, during Mexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered his army to attack San Francisco. The Californios (Americans) fought back and drove the Mexicans out of town. As a result of this event, settlers began to arrive in what is now Imperial County and soon there were many communities located here including Mission San Francisco de Asís (founded in 1776), Novato (founded in 1844), Belmont (founded in 1850), Gilroy (founded in 1853), Rancho Rincontepec (established in 1865), and Coyote Valley (established in 1883). During World War II, Imperial played an important role as both an airfield and naval base. It was home to two major United States Navy plants: Naval Air Station North Island at Point Reyes National Seashore and Naval Air Station Lemoore. In 1944, it became part of the newly created United States Military Districts Jurisdiction 9 which encompassed all of California except Nevada and Arizona. This district was responsible for all military activities within California not just those related to war efforts but also public works projects such as highway construction or housing development. In 1946, Military District Jurisdiction 9 was merged with Military District 7 to form Unified Command Jurisdiction 9 which included most of Northern California as well as parts of Oregon and Mexico City. At its peak enrollment there were over 1 million military personnel living inside the boundaries of this jurisdictional structure! Since its inception, Unified Command Jurisdiction 9 has been changing hands multiple times due to various conflicts or changes within the U S Army or Departmentof Defense itself - currently it includes only portions of Northern California south of Interstate 5! In recent years there have been rumors that Unified Command might be disbanded altogether due to budget cuts though no decision has yet been made official by either side!
