When Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria died in 1938, his five-year-old daughter Maria Theresa succeeded him as the new Empress of Austria. As head of state and ruling monarch, Maria Theresa was responsible for many social programs and important changes in Austrian society that led to increased national pride. One such program was the establishment of a coffee planter colony on the Danube River in Imperial, California in 1939. The coffee company founded by Maria Theresa's husband, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria (1863-1938), became one of the most successful in the world. The first coffeeshops opened up in Vienna and Budapest early that decade, but it wasn't until 1941 when backpacker Reinhold Messmer set up shop on Second Street near Sixth Avenue in downtown Imperial. At first, Messmer served only espresso drinks and hot chocolate with cinnamon sugar added; later he began serving a variety of groceries as well. By 1943, there were over 20 cafés open throughout Vienna and Budapest providing Turkish coffee to their Berliners and people living elsewhere within Central Europe with a taste of history. With World War II raging around them, some Austrians decided to move away from coffee entirely, choosing instead to focus on wine or other beverage production. However, over time enough Austrians reverted back to their love of coffee - especially after experiencing specialty Variations upon Java Coffee roasted at an altitude above 4200 meters according to some reports - so Imperial continued serving its iconic Turkish cup despite difficult economic times during the war years. By 1946 Vienna had doubled its number of cafes while Budapest had quadrupled its size; both cities were thriving due largely to tourism which supplanted traditional agriculture during wartime shortages caused by Nazi Germany's invasion and occupation policies targeting Hungary specifically. In Imperial, California, the first coffee was brewed in 1847. The area now known as Imperial County was part of Mexico until 1848 when it became part of the US. The first Starbucks opened its doors in 1994 in Berkeley, CA.
The Gold Rush of 1848 brought many people to Imperial County, California. Some of these people were prospectors, while others were farmers and builders. The first permanent settler in Imperial was James Wickersham, who arrived in 1851. He named his place after the Emperor of Japan, which he thought would make it more attractive to potential investors. Wickersham also built a small cabin and began trading with other settlers on the nearby Kern River. In 1862, John Sutter arrived in Imperial from Stockton and started building a rancho on what is now the corner of 4th Street and I Street NW. His ranch became one of the largest in California. Sutter was also an entrepreneur; he fronted theatrical productions, bought and sold land, manufactured goods, ran a hotel and served as president of two banks. In 1865, he married Emma Fillmore; they had six children together before she died in 1892 at the age of 50 years old. By 1870, there were over 1,000 people living in Imperial County; most were miners or their families working the goldfields around Mount Shasta or Nevada City. The county seat was moved from Mount Shasta to Bakersfield during this time (the move being made because San Joaquin County had become too populous). By 1880, most businesses had been established in Bakersfield; however, there remained a large population center in Imperial due to its location midway between Fresno and San Bernardino counties on several trade routesimportant for farming produce such as almonds (to be exported) and citrus fruit (to be imported). During World War II much activity took place here within wartime munitions plants making it one of the most heavily bombed areas of North America west of Sacramento

But before there was coffee and espresso, there were the morning raids into remote villages in search of beans. The first recorded mention of coffee is from an ancient Egyptian papyrus which reads: "In the beginning drinker of beans, Anouphis." This suggests that coffee was already well-known in ancient Egypt. The Egyptians were not the only ones enjoying this stimulant beverage. In Mesopotamia, cuneiform tablets from around 7000 BC record people drinking yucca (a type of plant) milk mixed with ground hempseed to achieve energy and wakefulness. During the Vedic period (4th century BC - 300 AD), India's most famous poet, Porus wrote about drinking Indian black pepper milk mixed with performed cereals to boost alertness and memory. Eventually, traders arrived in these parts carrying plants andbeans back with them. By 500 BC, Greeks had started importing roasted beans from Arabia and Ethiopia for their own use as a source of caffeine and flavorings. In 197 BC, Emperor Marcus Aurelius ordered his army to stop trading with Arabia because he believed that Arab traders were bringing new diseasesand drugs into Europe without properly testing them first! As a result of this banishment, Europeans began to develop their own methods for brewingcoffee - including using water heated over low heat until it turned dark; roasting whole beans insteadof grinding them; adding earth or ashes to the water before brewing;adding sugar or molasses; or using different types of filter paper (wet/dry). This early development led to some key distinctions between European-brewedcoffee and Arabian-brewedcoffee. European-brewedcoffee typically had a smoother taste due its higher roast level while Arabian-brewedcoffeewas richer in flavor due to its lower roast level. Furthermore, European-brewedcoffeeproduced more acidity than Arabian- brewed coffeeplease note that Ethiopian coffee contains high levels of natural acids which gives it a unique flavor profile not found in other coffees! In 1853, the United States acquired California from Mexico. The land had been claimed by both countries as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the Mexican-American War. The U.S. government intended to use California for ranching and mining operations, but it was not until after Californians had ratified a state constitution in 1850 that it became clear that they wanted more than just a piece of Rancho San Francisco land. After years of debate and lobbying by various groups, including the Mormon missionaries who had arrived in California in 1847, on February 14, 1850 Congress passed an act giving then-Governor John C. Fremont the authority to annex new territory east of Sacramento River into California. This act specified that no excessive gold mines or other mineral interests should be developed within California’s borders; however, because these restrictions were not fully enforced over time there were numerous large mines and surface claims built up along the eastern margin of what is now Imperial County while very little development took place in western parts of the county where miners and their families already lived. This situation changed when Commodore James Phipson sailed his flag at Monterey Bay on July 24, 1852 and announced plans to open up present day Kern County as well as build a road through central Sierra Nevada Mountains leading to Los Angeles Harbor – two key objectives for proponents of self-governance who saw this route as providing access to irrigate farmland exports downriver while also opening up resources around Mono Lake for development (Fremont plan). In January 1861 Governor David Waddell ordered all military forces out of Alta California except for those necessary to protect against internal Indian attack; following this declaration most residents turned their attention towards occupying Government buildings such as Fort Point Loma (now Golden Gate Park) or undermining military infrastructure instead of fighting against British troops stationed there until 1865 when hostilities resumed due to secessionist efforts within America itself – an event known today as The Civil War in Northern America. In 1865 General Order No 2 directed all white men over 21 years old living inside Californias borders “to move out gradually so that hereafter less intelligent colored people may have opportunity also”; this order led many farmers and townspeople who had settled near riverside towns like Yreka or Ukiah during earlier boom times during first half of 19th century to flee inland when troops arrived looking for them (Kern County Historical Society). By 1870 only about 5%of original adobe homes still remain extant statewide although many are found throughout Kern County especially in rural areas with few opportunities for preservation due primarily to lack of funding or interest from traditional historians/landowners/builders/etc.; nonetheless some laudable examples include Ironwood Villa which wasPreserved by American Legion National Guard unit from 1948 through 1960 and currently resides at Ironwood Campground located outside Bakersfield enclave; Doheny Mansion which has been preserved since 1915 when it served as home office & library for Kern County Board OF Supervisors; Chilula Adobe which features unique rock blocks forming gambrel roofed structure typical associated with Acoma mission period architecture & lies atop large sand dune area surrounded by agricultural fields now covered by residential neighborhoods adjacent thereto
In 1846, Imperial County was organized from parts of Monterey and San Bernardino counties. The county seat was Atascadero. In 1850, the Oregon Trail crossed the county's border with Nevada and began to be traveled through it. As a result, many people in Imperial County started living on the eastern side of the tracks. By 1860, there were only a few hundred residents left in Imperial County; by 1870, it had become primarily agricultural country. However, when California became an American state in 1850, Imperial County became one of its first areas. It joined with other northern counties to form Alameda County in 1872. The end of World War II affected much of California very differently than other parts of the United States. While most farms were abandoned after 1945 as a result of economic recession and population growth in newer states (such as Nevada), many farms continue to be used for agriculture or other purposes today because they are located close to urban areas or transportation networks that make them accessible for commercial use.
