Airforce gift history in Indio, California began at the end of World War II when the United States Air Force was founded. The first gifts were given to members of the military by civilians. After the war ended, many civilian employers gave presents to their employees. In 1951, a gift from General George Custer was presented to Colonel Harry Wickerman and his wife at their home in Indio. The couple later donated all of their possessions to the city in memory of their late husband and father-in-law. The Air Force has continued giving gifts through various donation programs over time. In 1992, General Colin Powell presented a gift from Secretary William Cohen to Mayor Kevin Johnson in order to help promote tourism within the city. Later that year, a group of airmen came into town and collected donations for local charities. A $5 million donation was made in 1999 from then-Captain Michael Jaffe and his wife Cindy towards building new facilities for local schools. Other donations have included items such as televisions and computers for use by airmen stationed overseas or clothing for troops stationed on base. The City of Indio has worked hard to keep up with changes that have come along with technology since it became incorporated as a city within California during 1959. For example, they built an online storefront specifically for selling Air Force memorabilia which allows people from all around the world to purchase items related to American military service. The California Air National Guard's 142nd Airlift Wing is the present arm of the United States Air Force in Indio, California. It was activated on 1 July 1948 as a provisional unit of the Continental Air Forces, and became fully activated on 15 October 1949 when it was assigned to the Ninth Air Force. The wing affiliation with the Ninth AF lasted until 14 May 1956 when it was reassigned to the First Tactical Fighter Wing under command of First Aerospace Division at Malmstrom AFB, Montana. The wing relocated there on 1 September 1958 and became fully functional as a full-time USAF unit with its own distinct identity and insignia. In 1990, then-Major General Donald Wuerth assumed command of all USAF units located in Southern California; this included the 142nd Airlift Wing which he transferred from Ninth AF to First Tactical Fighter Wing effective 1 September 1988. In 1992 Major General Leroy Nunn relieved Major General Wuerth after his retirement from military service effective 9 November 1991 and assumedcommand of all USAF units in Indio including the 142nd Airlift Wing; this included also elements of IXAF stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLC) and Twentynine Palms (TPAL). On 16 December 1992 MajorGeneral Leroy Nunn announced that he would retire effective 19 December 1992 due to health reasons. He had served in that post for 29 years, longest among active commanders in IAF/USAF history

The United States Air Force is one of the largest air forces in the world. It has over 350,000 active duty military and civilian members. The USAF operates more than 60 bases around the world and employs over 260,000 people. In 1941, the USAAF was created when President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9102 which directed the Secretary of War to create an air force for national defence. The first unit activated was the 1st Fighter Group which consisted of P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft. In 1942, World War II began and America's first fighter group became part of First Air Force under General Carl Spaatz who commanded NinthAir Force at Homestead Army Airfield in Florida. By 1945, First Air Force had been redesignated Eighth Air Force and was responsible for all American combat aviation activities in Europe as well as support operations over Japan. During World War II, numerous new types of aircraft were developed including jet fighters such as North American F-86 Sabres and Lockheed P-2 Neptune bombers. Other types such as Boeing B-29 Superfortresses were also used during this time period including Operation Crossroads which saw strategic bombing campaigns against Japanese cities beginning on December 8th 1944; this led to thousands of deaths among Japanese civilians from radiation poisoning caused by nuclear bombs dropped by American planes). Many famous Americans served in the USAF during World War II including: Billy Mitchell (the first person to autograph a plane), Jimmy Dean (the only human being ever to fly solo across America) Chuck Yeager (the first pilot to break altitude records), Eddie Rickenbacker (founder and owner of baseball team Los Angeles Dodgers) Wiley Post (pilot flying ace with Lockheed P-38 Lightning pilots), Neil Armstrong (first man on Mars) and Joe Meek (pilot shot down over Germany while flying Spitfire Mk IXs). During 1945 many buildings within the USAF were destroyed or seized by enemy forces including Fort Worth Army Air Field where Task Forces 95–101 were based; these commando groups flew missions behind enemy lines carrying out sabotage operations against Axis targets such as bridges, dams, oil refineries etc.. These operations are best known through movies like "Eisenhower" or "The Great Escape". In 1947 President Harry S Truman ordered a review of all USAAF capability in order to improve performance after years of service that had shown little sign improvement since 1940. This review resulted in creation of Tactical Air Command under General Curtis LeMay who was given authority to operate any type of fighter aircraft regardless of size or purpose(this allowed fighters like Mustang Shelby Mustang jets operated by Tactical Fighter Command RAF/Lancaster Bomber Command RAF/Noorduynse Jet Propelled Squadron Nos 19–25). On April 12th 1948 Major General John A Vansittart became commander NinthAirForce with responsibility for all Bomber Command activity worldwide with headquarters located at Offutt AFB Nebraska . On October 15th 1949 ThirdAF moved its Headquarters from Tucson Arizona to Beale AFB California . On November 20th 1951 ThirdAF disbanded when its mission changed from bomber commando training units into tactical air forces responsible for air superiority Over Korea
