The history of the army gift is a long and varied one. From ancient to modern times, there have been many occasions when people have given gifts to the military. The United States Army was founded in 1775 and the first unit to fight in the American Revolution was the 3rd Infantry Regiment of California. The modern U.S. Army was born in 1802 when General George Washington ordered an organization of a standing army to support his role as Commander-inSessions of the United States. The 1st Infantry Regiment, California volunteers, fought at Palo Alto and Quimby before being mustered into service on December 12, 1802. In 1805, the regiment became part of the 2nd Infantry Brigade under Lieutenant Colonel James K. Polk’s command and fought at Buena Vista and Monterrey before moving to Mexico City for duty in 1808-1809 during the Peninsular War. After returning home in 1810, Polk's unit was redesignated as 2nd Battalion (4th California) Infantry Regiment #2 which served with distinction at Cerro Gordo, Resaca del Tejo and Chapultepec before being mustered out on July 9, 1814. In 1861-1862 during the American Civil War soldiers from both sides used Indio as a staging area before finally joining up with their respective units near San Diego on April 15th 1862 where they were based until May 25th 1862 when they moved northwest towards Sacramento where they joined forces with Confederate troops under General Robert Ewell to repel an attack by Union Major General Prentiss south of Sacramento on May 14th 1862 known as Battle ofSacramento River Plateau or battle for Bear Valley north of Sacramento known as Battle of Tule Lake due to its location upstream from that battle site today known simply as “the Battle ofIndio” There are no remains located within city limits today but there are numerous artifacts located within several miles around downtown Indio including: Fort Kearny (now Castle Point), Fort Bragg (now Camp Pendleton), Presidio Walls (now Old Town Hall), Indian Mission adobe buildings now part of University Village off State Route 66 just east Of I Street between Main Street & Second Street; old Morongo Adobe Complex west Of Main Street between Third & Fourth Streets; old Central School building now part of University Village complex off I Street between Second & Third Streets; mission San Juan Capistrano existing since 1792 still stands today across from current day City Hall building
Indio is a city in California, United States. It lies on the San Joaquin River and is surrounded by the Sequoia National Park. The population was 134,792 as of 2010. Indio is the most populous city in Kern County, California. In 1853, prospectors discovered gold in what is now Indio and began to build a settlement around it. The name "Indio" comes from Mexican Mexico and means "the place where the river flows." In 1868, General Antonio Lomas purchased land adjacent to what is now downtown Indio from Rancho Cucamonga Indians for $5 per acre (1/6 mile). The town gradually grew with its location as a crossroads for travelers on Route 66 and other routes leading westward. The first post office opened in 1870, but continued operations only until 1875 because of difficulties getting letters sent eastward. After that time, mail was transported by horse or ox team to Main Street near today's First Baptist Church before being delivered through nearby Painted Post Road to San Francisco via stagecoach service. A school was built in 1870 but closed due to lack of students; it reopened in 1872 under the name Mission School District No. 1 but again closed due to lack of pupils after two years. In 1906, construction began on the current City Hall building which became operational that same year. The first annexation election for Kern County occurred in 1907 and Indio residents voted against annexation into Kern County based on concerns about high taxes and lack of amenities inside the new county limits; however, this did not stop development within Indio itself which soon consisted of several large commercial projects including an armory used during World War II by Don Armstrong's Armament Company (now known as Lockheed Martin) as well as new housing developments such as Pioneer Heights and Valley View Village. After years of debate among local officials over whether or not to annex into Los Angeles County (the area now bounded by downtown Los Angeles on one side and Riverside on the other), which would have given indios access to social services provided within LA counties like education & health care while still maintaining their own government structure, Inglewood annexed intoLA in 1961 while IndIO remained unannexed despiteealous efforts by some city officials to secede from LA entirely

Indio, California is a city in San Bernardino County, California. It is located on the Mojave Desert and has a population of 83,597 as of 2018. The original Adobe Walls were built in 1867 by George A. Smith and are now part of the University of Arizona campus. Indio was founded in 1881 as an agricultural community on the east side of what is now the downtown area. The City Council voted to make Indio an incorporated city in 1903. In 1911, it became one of three cities within San Bernardino County to be annexed into Los Angeles County when that county was created from parts of Orange and Riverside counties.
In 1853, a group of men and women led by José Joaquín Cámpora founded the town of Indio on Rancho Cañón de la Frontera in present-day Riverside County. The first post office was established in 1855, and the first store was built in 1857. In 1865, the state of California granted land to indians for colonization, and Indio became part of the new state. In 1888, mining operations began in Indio and quickly developed into a major industry. By 1912,Indio had a population of over 100 people and was home to two churches and several businesses. A fire destroyed much of the city during World War II; however, it resumed growth after the war ended. Today, Indio is an important center for Latino culture with a population that exceeds 5,000 people.
