Indio is a city in California, United States. The population was 28,559 at the 2010 census. It is located on the western edge of San Diego County and is adjacent to both the Mexican state of Baja California and the US state of Arizona. Indio was founded by Mexican settlers in 1851 as Pueblo de las Aguas Calientes. In 1875, it became part of what would become Los Angeles County. The history of Indio dates back to pre-contact times when Native American people lived hereabouts. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish missionaries in 1769 and they named the location "Agua Caliente" (calm water). A year later, another group of missionaries came ashore with more information about this region and started to name things accordingly: Pueblo de las Aguas Calientes (Pueblo of Warm Waters). This settlement continued for many years until 1851 when American settlers arrived seeking land grants in what is now San Diego County. The first white settler in Indio was George Wickersham who arrived on July 3rd, 1851 from Redington Township, Ohio with his family. He built a small cabin near present day Wickenburg Creek before starting a trading post called El Rancho del Viejo (Old Ranch) which lasted for six months before being abandoned due to lack of business opportunities inherent in ranching during that time period. In November 1850, Wickersham also purchased two thousand acres (8 km2) along modern Day Indian Wells Boulevard east of Town Square Road on which he founded what would become known as Indio Rancho Village where he raised horses and cattle while still living at El Rancho del Viejo. From these beginnings there gradually evolved into an isolated but thriving small town that today has a population numbering 28,559 residents including 14 villages which constitute the City proper within our limits - making it one of America’s most populous cities!
On January 6, 1847, the first post office was established in Indio with the name of Germania. The town was named for Friedrich Wilhelm von Indi, a Prussian general who had fought in Mexico during the Mexican-American War.
