The first Gourmet Coffee House was located on Speedway Boulevard in Indio, California. It was open from 1927 to 1930 and served coffee that had been roasted in Europe. The second Gourmet Coffee House was also located on Speedway Boulevard, but it operated from 1949 to 1957. It is considered to be the first gourmet coffee house in California. The popularity of gourmet coffee began to grow after World War II when people started realizing that this type of coffee could provide a high-quality product at an affordable price. After the war, many people who were interested in buying gourmet coffee started looking for stores that specialized in this type of coffee. In 1948, Harry Glover set up another store called The Gourmet Shop on Imperial Highway in Indio, California. This store became known as the home of the world’s best gourmet coffee beans and helped promote the taste of expensive European-roasted beans within reach of all Americans. In 1957, Harry Glover passed away and his wife Ida took over operations at The Gourmet Shop until her death in 1984. In 1998, Harry Glover’s son John reopened the business under the name Harry’s Cafe & Coffeeshop online which continues to serve excellent quality coffees today.
