The city's name comes from American Indian legend which tells of two brothers who were lost at sea and found their way to a large tree with fruit that grew from it. They named their find "Indio" after this tree. As time passed and more people arrived in Indio, they began to rename themselves based on where they lived or what type of work they did. Some examples include: Hacienda del Norte (Hacienda North) for those living near San Gabriel River; Rancho Alamosa (Rancho Alamosa) for anyone working in the nearby mountains; and Plaza de los Angeles (Plaza Los Angeles) for all Mexicans living north of Mexican Avenue. During prohibition, Indio became known as "The beer capital of America" because it was home to many breweries that produced both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beers. In 1933, when Prohibition ended, local breweries merged into larger companies and Indio became part of these conglomerates. However, some small businesses still remain today including: The Grapeseed Café & Brewery (which produces craft beer), El Paso Brewing Company (the first brewery ever built inside an American military installation), Brewery Pacifica (manufacturing Pilsner Urquell styles), The Alehouse Chinese Restaurant & Lounge(serving up authentic Chinese food), KFC locations throughout town, as well as several independent restaurants including downtown's namesake Cafe Doña Lupe and El Diablo's Mexican Grill & Cantina
The city of Indio, California was founded on April 25, 1846 by the brothers Don Carlos and Ignacio Martinez. The town grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the San Joaquin River and its access to a network of trails that led to nearby agricultural areas. In 1869, the Martinez brothers sold their holdings in Indio to Francisco Serna for $8,000. Serna built the first school in Indio and began marketing citrus fruit as a mainstay of local economy. By 1888,Indio had become one of Southern California's most thriving towns with over 20 businesses and 100 residents. During World War II,Indio played an important role as a munitions manufacturing center for the war effort. After the war ended,the city experienced rapid growth in population and commerce due to new development such as Sheraton Park and Interstate 5. In recent decades,Indio has seen increasing gentrification and development around its downtown core which has resulted in increased traffic congestion and health concerns.
