In 1870-71 three extensive missions were conducted along 1/2 mile wide fault line between San Diego County and Los Angeles County called Anza–Borrego Deserts Field Campaign; these Missions were located at what is today downtown Indio east of Colorado Boulevard on Mission Road (now State Route 78). A very small detachment under Captain Fenton took part in this campaign including armed escort for General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who rode into Pasadena on November 3rd 1870 just prior to his march on Mexico City that same year.
