Indio, California is a city in the San Diego metropolitan area, located on the eastern edge of the US state of California. The population was 853,545 at the 2010 census. Indio is home to several large aerospace and defense companies as well as some smaller businesses and universities. It is also known for its natural beauty and relaxed lifestyle. The first Europeans to visit Indio were Portuguese explorers in 1542 who named it "Monterey". The Mexican military forces that had moved westward from Mexico City under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna founded what would become Indio on December 29, 1821. At that time there were only a few Indian villages in this region of central California. In 1846, when Californios (Californians who had become citizens of Mexico) took over most of this region from the Mexican government, they renamed it for Iraiso Montoya y Costilla which means "mountain peak" or "peak of Mount Mora", depending on where one looked. In 1861, during the American Civil War, many myriads of soldiers and civilians fought at Indio's expense along with tens of thousands more across America's vast theater of war. The Battle of Indio was one such engagement; an artillery duel between Confederate batteries and Union Infantry Regiment #2 occurred near Rancho del Norte east-northeastof town on October 25th 1861 afternoon

Indio, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It was founded on December 12, 1853 by American Civil War veteran John C. Frémont as a wagon stop on the old Mexican trail. The town rapidly grew and by 1886 had become an agricultural center with over 100 businesses. In 1902, Indio became the capital of California. The cityscape of Indio today is a mix of Victorian architecture and rancho style homes dating back to the early 20th century.
The city of Indio, California was founded on December 24, 1853 by George W. Armstrong, who named it for his father-in-law, the U.S. General Antonio L. Navarro. The first post office in Indio was established in 1854 and the first store opened in 1855. In 1865, the first schools were built and the city became a railroad town. In 1907, Indio merged with neighboring Pico Rivera to form the newly created City of Pico Rivera.
