The first coffee roasters in Indio were Frenchmen's Coffee Company, Dutch Bros., and Harney & Sons. In 1915, Conrad Harney opened the first grocery store in town and began selling pre-packaged beans to local residents. By 1951, all of the major grocers had signed on to carrying Harney's beans. The popularity of these small-batch imports led to a surge in manufacturing activity at nearby Doheny Coffee Roasters (now Peet's Coffee). This new production allowed for greater variability in flavor and quality, which led to more innovation and improvement at the Doheny factory over time. In the early 1990s, a group of entrepreneurs decided that they wanted to support independent small-batch roasters throughout California. They founded First National Coffee Co., which became one of the largest independent coffee roasters in America.
