The Inglewood Air Force Base gift history began in the early 1940s when the United StatesAAF leased land from the ranching community of Rancho Palos Verdes. The base was first known as "Amber" and served as an airport for military personnel stationed on or near Los Angeles County. In 1948, the USAF opened a new hangar on the south side of base that became known as "Tower" and housed both fighter bombers and strategic bombers. In 1951, Tower was renamed "Inglewood" in honor of General James E. Inge, Jr., Superintendent of Adult Education at USAAF Headquarters in Washington D.C., who contributed $10,000 to help finance the construction of a wing training school at Inglewood AFB. The wing school became operational in 1954 and soon produced top flight pilots such as John F Kennedy, Richard Nixon and Neil Armstrong. The USAF maintained a large presence in Southern California through Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) during the 1990s. During this time period, Inglewood AFB played host to three wings: 1st Fighter Wing (later Tactical Fighter Wing/3), 2nd Bombardment Wing (later Strategic Bomber Command/8) and 3rd Airlift Wing (later Airlift Command/10). As BRAC dissolved in 1995, all USAF bases were placed intoleasing authority which meant anyBase could be sold or leased at will by whoever wanted it - including Inglewood AFB! This led to some strange gifts going out from DoD over the years - some seemingly innocuous like gym memberships for military spouses while others more bizarre like an air hockey game machine donated by Sega! It wasn't until 2003 that something truly unique happened when then-Chief Master Sergeant Dave Sibley bestowed his final gift upon AFB residents - an air force installation complete with its own runway! Now called Joint Base Ventura County Airport Authority Stadium & Events Center (JBVCE), this facility offers programs and events for local businesses and is home to numerous annual functions such as Hollywood's 4th of July fireworks show and State Fair Day parade!
