In response to this mission, the Coast Guard has developed a number of gift traditions and gifts that have helped support its efforts. One of the earliest gifts given by the Coast Guard was a flagpole. The first flagpole was purchased in 1888 from John Paulding, superintendent of New York Harbor. From this purchase, it is evident that the Coast Guard had a long history of giving back to those who helped them provide safety and security for our coastline. Inglewood is located in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. The population was 66,711 at the 2010 census. The city was founded on December 3, 1887 by a group of Americans from Illinois and New York who were interested in purchasing land in what is now Southern California. They named their new town after Inglewood, England, where they had been living while awaiting clearance to settle in America. The first post office opened in Inglewood on November 15, 1888. In 1893, the first store was built and operated by Elisha Wickersham and his brother-in-law Moses Crayton. By 1899, there were three stores and twenty-one businesses operating in Inglewood with a total payroll of $2 million. In 1901, the first motion picture studio was built at Hollywood Park by Carl Laemmle Jr., founder of Universal Pictures. The two largest movie theaters located in downtown Inglewood were the Orpheum Theatre (now called Regal Cinemas) and the Mayfair Theater (now known as AMC Pacific Place). In 1916, Paramount Pictures moved its film production facilities from Culver City to Inglewood for an initial investment of $10 million which led to its annexation by Los Angeles County as part of that year’s consolidation process within California. On October 1st 1911 Elmer Gantry became one of the charter members of Chamber Of Commerce #1 which served as a social club for local farmers throughout Southern California during prohibition years between 1920-1933 inclusive; he also donated 7 acres lot next to Lake Worth Boulevard east side near Ventura Boulevard/UCLA campus for use as Recreation Park starting 1923 under name “Gantry Park” until his death 1949; donation continues through present day being used mostly for football games & other community events thru Pasadena Parks Department…Gantry family membership continued thru all phases including burial at Gantry Cemetery south sideof Lake Worth Blvd just northwest corner from UCLA Campus since 1924...During early 1920s when movies began coming out regularly here it attracted more people than either Beverly Hills or West Hollywood combined so many offered their homes (& cars) for quickies back then too! There are several interesting facts about this history: - One Oddity: On July 15th 1922 actor James Arness died suddenly after playing golf at Atwater Village Golf Course & subsequent autopsy found no evidence any foul play involved; coroner ruled natural causes due to heart attack... this event marked only second time death attributed solely to playing golf on record & only 5th time such an event occurred nationwide - Being founded minutes after Hollywood went dry following prohibition ended didn't hurt either; most chapels / churches stayed open until beer started flowing again - After becoming a city (in 1907), development slowed down because people wanted more conveniences like telephone service or electric Lighting so citizens voted against annexation back then - After merging with LA county it experienced rapid growth due to overspending on services but eventually calmed down due to budget restrictions
