In 1880, Italian immigrants founded a cooperative grocery store on Vermont Street in Inglewood that became one of the most popular shopping destinations for Italians in Los Angeles. Eventually, several other co-operative stores were opened throughout Los Angeles County. In 1902, Josefinas Coffee & Tea was founded in Inglewood by Josefina Gomez and her husband Manuel Gomez Sr.. This business provided variety of coffees from all over South America to local customers. The company prospered until World War II when it was destroyed by fire. In 1957, Antonio Ramos started his own coffee farm near Wilmington Valley Racetrack and began growing Arabica beans for blending into different blends for retail customers around Southern California. Many people in Inglewood are descended from early Spanish settlers who arrived here during the Gold Rush era in 1848-49 led by José Alvarado and his brother-in-law Manuel Nieto de la Torre y Vargas. In 1893 two brothers named John Wainer and Harry Potter opened up what would become known as Potter’s Grocery store on Third Street between Glendale Boulevard and Larchmont Avenue (now Yorba Linda Avenue). In 1896 they added a second store on Vine Street just west of Mulholland Drive (now Elysian Park Avenue). That year John Wainer also founded JW Anderson Manufacturing Company which manufactured lawn mowers, lawn chairs and other household items until it merged with Massey Ferguson Corporation in 1961 to form Briggs & Stratton Corporation. Harry Potter operated his store out of his home until 1920 when he moved it to 6090 North Olympic Boulevard where he continued to operate it until his death in 1951 (). 1
