The founders were Luther Becker, Fritz Kappeler, Hermann Schweizer and Adolf Engelbrecht. They started off with two cups of coffee each day for their customers. In 1912, they opened up a second business called the Dutchman's Coffee Shop on 6th Street in Inglewood. ThisBusiness lasted until 1914 when it was sold to Harry Harker who reopened it as the Harker Coffee Store. In 1916, Harry Harker moved his store to 5th Street in Inglewood which became the heart of the city's commercial district. He continued to run his store until he died in 1923 at the age of 86 years old. His son-in-law Julius Schwarz took over running his father's business until he too passed away in 1957 at the age of 83 years old. After Julius Schwarz's death, his widow Annette Schwarz took over running her father's business until she also passed away in 1982 at the age of 71 years old. Today, Starbucks Corporation owns all three businesses that operated within walking distance from its current headquarters: The Harker Coffee Store (now known as Starbucks), The Dutchman’s Coffee Shop (now known as Dutch Bros.) and Annette Schwarz’s inherited business (now known as Arnie’s).

It is the second-most populous city in Los Angeles County and the most populous city east of downtown Los Angeles. The name "Inglewood" comes from English meaning place with woods. The first settlement in what is now Inglewood was made up of several small villages near present-day Hawthorne Boulevard and Exposition Boulevard. On January 24, 1871, three men—George Westinghouse, James Phelan and Amos Kendall—established the town of Inglewood on land north of Hawthorne Boulevard and west of Exposition Boulevard. The original town site included only a few scattered houses. In 1872, George Westinghouse built a store and home at 3205 North La Brea Avenue in Inglewood; this became his thriving business center which attracted other industry owners to move into his area including lumbermen Charles Leland and John Sutter who constructed their own mills around that time. In 1875 Western Electric moved its operations to Inglewood from Chicago after purchasing AC company telephone lines from Bell Telephone Company for $1 million (equivalent to $100 million in 2017). In 1888 Wernher von Braun founded JPL (later renamed Lockheed Martin) based out of his Sunnyvale garage south of Interstate 5 in San Pedro Springs before moving it to Burbank just outside Pasadena in 1957 where it continued developing advanced space technology until 2007 when it moved again to Malibushore Drive on Santa Monica Island adjacent to Hollywood Studios

The name "Inglewood" originated from an Old English word meaning wooded ground or clearing where cattle could be pastured. The city's namesake is George Eastman, who founded Rochester Institute of Technology in 1887 and helped to create what is now Midwestern United States education powerhouse Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT). He also donated land to make way for the city's original central square which still stands today at North Beverly Boulevard and West Magnolia Avenue.
