In 1919, Hollywood producer Jesse Lasky bought 5,000 acres (20 km2) of Rancho Santa Anita land east of downtown Los Angeles for $1 million to establish Hollywood Park. He named his rancho after his home town of ingleside, London. In 1922 he sold the property to movie mogul Edward DeMille for $3 million. DeMille built Paramount Pictures studios there and used the land as part of his celebrity estates such as Vinegar Hill and Bel Air. Inglewood is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. It was founded in 1887 by brothers George and Jesse Inglewood. The city's population reached 1,500 in 1870 and peaked at 5,000 in 1910. However, since then it has shrunk to just over 200 residents today. The first settlers of what would become Inglewood were the Jesuits who arrived on horseback from Sayreville, New Jersey in 1857. The Jesuits were a group of religious men who had left France for the United States to help build a new civilization after the French Revolution. They landed at San Diego on September 17th, 1857 and soon started building their own small ranch near present-day Hawthorne Boulevard and Olive Street. In 1860, William Randolph Hearst purchased the Rancho San Vicente y la Paloma from Santiago de Compostela heirs Pedro y Francisco López and Nicolás Bravo for $5,000 cash. Hearst renamed it Hearst Ranch after his brother-in-law John Davenport Hearst Sr.. In 1863 he sold part of the ranch to Samuel Untermyer for $10,000 which allowed him to build his palatial home now known as Starland Place which can still be seen today across Hawthorne Boulevard from UNTURNED ROAD (now Harbor Freeway). In 1865 George Waddell moved into Waddell House which later became known as the Hotel Inglewood while also working at nearby Pico Hotel as night shift clerk/ concierge. On November 12th 1865 Waddell married Evalyn Biddle at Stinson Methodist Episcopal Church with Revd Dr David Starr Jordan officiating. That same year saw the opening of what would eventually become one of LA's most famous movie theatres – The Paramount Theatre located at 605 Vine street between La Brea Avenue and Sunset Boulevard – becoming Hollywood’s first “movie palace” with its stately exterior designed by architect Alfred Angelo Moretti according to plans drawn up by noted landscape architect Haddon Layton .
